Has anyone tried engaging with their union about women's rights to single sex spaces at work (eg toilets)? PCS state "gender" as a protected characteristic on their website which isn't a promising start...

I think the unions have been successfully colonised by the activists. See recent vote for self-ID at TUC. Jo Grady, a union official in the University and Colleges Union (UCU) and academic at Sheffield using terfblocker on twitter. But it would be important to push back.

MrPan · 20/03/2019 09:03

The union which covers most of the workforce in my employ are the wokiest of the woke, and actively offered to contribute to my disciplinary process on the twanw issue. So no, not really.

We did have mixed sex toilets here, and this was only rectified ( on fully-cabined stalls) when the company H&S woman quoted the legislation. The union were not interested from the start.
As a life-long union member and v experienced union rep I don't hold out much hope.

Tap335 · 20/03/2019 09:21

That's just awful, real dereliction of day from the union. What's the point of unions if they don't support workers?

Tap335 · 20/03/2019 09:22

duty, not day

GCAcademic · 20/03/2019 09:26

Jo Grady may end up being the new UCU President, Tap. I do hope there is a hustings near me because there are questions I would like to ask her.

Tap335 · 20/03/2019 09:36

Oh dear. That would not be a good thing at all. She has done some good work on USS but what I've seen of her on twitter is very off-putting. Lib fem through and through, complete with red lipstick and stupid selfies.

JustHereForThePooStories · 20/03/2019 09:38

Given how terrible most unions are at anything to do with employment legislation, I wouldn’t hold out much hope.

GCAcademic · 20/03/2019 10:00

She (Grady) just seems extraordinarily stupid. I am amazed recently at the number of academics I find myself making this observation of. A large number of such people seem to be active in UCU, unfortunately, and are happily no-platforming people like Selina Todd, and shouting down motions in support of academic freedom at branch meetings.

In the context of trade unions and gender identity ideology, this conference on 'self-identities' may be of interest:

UCU members might be interested to know what their union dues are paying for.

morningtoncrescent62 · 22/03/2019 18:03

Can you ask your branch to organise a hustings, GCAcademic? All the candidates should be pushed to say what they think about academic freedom in relation to self-ID even if not about their actual views.

Yearofchange · 22/03/2019 18:10

The UCU branch at my local university are very pro freedom of speech in relation to this matter and gender critical - they were the people that prompted me to look into this in more detail around the time that Germaine Greer was no platformed as they were concerned about it.

Floisme · 22/03/2019 18:11

Sorry to hear of your experience MrPan. I fear it would be mine too were I ever in that situation. Absolutely no way would I trust my union on this issue.

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/03/2019 18:13

Nope the UCU held a transgender Remembrance Day so I pointed out the statistics in violence against women and girls and asked if they would have an equivalent act of remembrance for that. Bearing in mind I wasn't asking them to not have the transgender day, just to respect the loss of life amongst women with an equal show of respect. They said no
