There have been a few threads on this board recently re; organ donation. The NHS Blood and Organ Donation Team saw the above thread and MNHQ have posted (on page 32) saying that we can post questions and that someone will be along to answer them. (Hopefully they won't take the PM approach). Anyway, thought I would flag this up in case anyone was interested Smile

Ok.

  1. What steps are in place to accurately record and ensure the SEX of donors and recipients is known in order to ensure that no adverse effects occur from sex specific immunological / transplant effects?

Sorry, Bowl, I should have been clearer - you need to click on the MNHQ message (page 32 of the above link) and post questions there.

Ah Ok. Will do!

Grin Bowl it is a great question but you need to go to the MNHQ post on page 32, click on the link in that post (in blue, guest post) (there are 8 questions there at the moment) not post it on the general thread. (I would make a useless teacher).

Bowl I use to work in this environment so I can give you a basic answer to that question. Each person on the transplant list has to send blood samples for tissue typing every month (except for kidney transplants). Organs are allocated according to best match with the tissue typing samples taken from the donor. Tissue typing samples are repeated for the recipients immediately prior to transplant to ensure that they have not developed new antibodies since their last routine blood test.
I would think that accurate recording of sex of people on the donor register would highlight if there was a difference between the willingness of men and women to donate which might then inform campaigns about increasing donor numbers.
