The scene with Phoebe Waller Bridge and Kristin Scott Thomas in the bar. Trying to avoid spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it, but you so rarely get to hear anything positive about ageing. It was really moving and liberating to hear what KST's character had to say about approaching 60, and how much better it is than being in your 30s. I'm turning 40 this year and looking forward to leaving the depression and insecurities of my 30s behind, and I really loved this scene

I've not seen it yet - saving it all up for a binge. So many talented women on that show.

Your 40s? Piece of piss and if you've still got them to look forward to then all I can say is lucky, lucky you.

Your 60s though - just my experience but, to be perfectly honest they can be quite tough. Maybe I know too many people who will count themselves lucky if they get out of them alive.

I think idealising getting older is just as silly as trying to pretend it doesn't happen. It's part of life - great bits, shitty bits.

I turned to DH at the end of this weeks episode and said ‘that was like poetry’. I’m not even sure what I meant! Just love it.

thatdamnwoman · 19/03/2019 19:32

Yes, yes, yes to all this. Being older is wonderfully liberating. Can't recommend it too highly.

LassOfFyvie · 19/03/2019 21:46

I loved the first series and the first episode of the second series was brilliant. I thought this one was really weak.

The dropping the award and breaking it is such a hackneyed idea as is the trying to tempt the hot priest.

Kristin Scott Thomas is beautiful. I agreed with the first part of her talk at the bar about awards for women; the second part about women's pain had me rolling my eyes.

Excellent! I will download the episodes. The first series was fantastic I don’t understand why it didn’t really get the attention it deserved.

Cutandpaste · 20/03/2019 16:19

I thought the first episode of this series was a masterclass in how to write a sitcom. It was just perfect, every word and every look.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 20/03/2019 16:53

I partly agree with Lass. I was mesmerised by the Hot Priest storyline but I found the Kristin Scott Thomas stuff a bit forced.

'I thought the first episode of this series was a masterclass in how to write a sitcom'

Completely agree. Shocking, funny, very sad, fabulous characters and dialogue that was just fizzing with energy and originality. She's a totally brilliant writer

I loved the way KST said that Fleabag "wasn't her type" - so she, the older woman, was making the decision about who she slept with. I loved that.

It's just perfect, right down to only the priest breaking the fourth wall.

RuggyPeg · 20/03/2019 19:10

I don't think it's mainstream enough for a prime slot. Female lead, feminism running right through it, 'taboo' subjects........it's enough to make Jane public reach for the smelling salts!

heartshapedpositnotes · 23/03/2019 20:22

I hated, HATED the first season (started a couple of days ago). My biggest bugbear at the time was what I considered to the unsubtle and overused breaking of the fourth wall. Feel like a right knob now when it was so beautifully addressed in S2 ep3 and take everything back - love it! Grin

Other posters addressing how women facilitate the lives of others is so poignant. As a late 30's single woman by choice, it's over the last couple of years that I've realised that a coupled/family life (i.e. facilitating) isn't for me. Kristen Scott Thomas's brilliant monologue helps to counteract feelings of 'I feel so happy and joyous being single and bypassing societal norms, but will I regret later when reproductive time runs out?'.

It was also so interesting that the protagonist herself, the priest, and Kristen are voluntarily celibate. It harks back to some really inspiring mumsnet threads about loving being single and ultimately, free.

DH and I recently binge watched the first series and are now watching the second

Love it

DH says it's one of the best things he has seen for ages

catdoctor · 24/03/2019 12:38

I haven’t seen first series - watched the first 3 episodes series 2 last night and loved it.
As a ‘woman of a certain age’ I’ve found ageing highly liberating.
As an aside - I have a theory that it’s oestrogen that helps make us compliant and as that tails off, we no longer GAF.
Really looking forward to catching up on the first series.

TorchesTorches · 24/03/2019 12:50

I have found it fantastic. It's the best written in acted thing on t v and genuinely different. I did worry about having an Irish priest (never met one under 70!) as a love interest. it seemed so unlikely given that nobody is joining the (Catholic) priesthood these days. but actually it's been covered in a fairly believable way.

WomaninBoots · 25/03/2019 15:39

I've just binge watched the lot on the strength of this thread. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. It's so... real. Somehow.

Gone2far · 25/03/2019 16:02

I know the menopause isn't plain sailing for everyone but I found it liberating and it makes a nice change to see that reflected in the programme

Lottapianos · 25/03/2019 16:55

'I've just binge watched the lot on the strength of this thread'

Oh yay! I'm so glad you love it Smile
