Another article from the Sunday Telegraph

Two thirds of British public think it is cheating for women born male to compete in women's sport, says poll

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/03/10/two-thirds-british-public-think-cheating-women-born-male-compete/

Only 12% of those polled thought it was not cheating for males to compete with females (with 25% not sure)

I’d love to know how they defined Transgender and indeed if they did.

They did Big

Transgender
‘Transgender’ is the umbrella term for people who identify with a different gender from the one they were assigned at birth – often diagnosed as ‘gender dysphoria’. The term ‘transsexual’ refers more specifically to someone who has had medical intervention, and is considered archaic.

SwearyG · 11/03/2019 08:59

That definition is used in the Telegraph's information box Ali - it's not clear whether it was used on the survey. I'd be surprised if it were because if people knew that TG meant no intervention required at all and current IOC rules allow TG to compete with 5x the upper normal women's level of testosterone nobody could call it fair.

Hulo · 11/03/2019 09:21

Even with the shortcomings mentioned, it's pretty clear how the general public think, yet that majority view is still treated as bizarre and marginal by so much of the media.

Imnobody4 · 11/03/2019 10:10

I'm a bit gobsmacked at this.
The findings showed that the general public is broadly split over whether children should be encouraged from an early age to live out the gender they feel most comfortable, with 37 per cent agreeing, and 34 disagreeing.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 11/03/2019 13:37

Ah sorry, I misunderstood. I liked the patient explaining in the article though and I'm noticing it's happening more and more.

Previously, media were discussingTranswoman without context, risking confusion amongst some readers. Now I'm seeing more lengthy explanations that will help to peak readers.

I'm not. If you are new to this debate you might reasonably assume that it means would you let your girl play with dinosaurs. If you are not new to the debate you might reasonably assume it means that if your girl plays with dinosaurs you would encourage them onto puberty blockers / hormones etc.

It's a very ambiguous question and totally open to interpretation.

Persifleur · 11/03/2019 13:47

I can't access the article right now. Does it make it clear that transwomen are people born male? I ask because a surprising number of people think it means people born female who now identify as men. I kid you not.

Persifleur · 11/03/2019 13:49

And shocking stats about children. Again, I'd want to know exactly what was asked and what people understood. Are they just talking about toys, clothes and names or do they mean blockers? If the latter then Shock Shock Shock

I'd have agreed with that statement before I knew the implications of the term gender in relation to trans.

rosablue · 11/03/2019 21:20

Even that definition is unclear though - while it mentions that transsexuals may have had medical intervention it then goes on to say the term is now considered outdated. I bet lots of people reading will think that it is like different terms used to identify race - eg black or coloured - that people, particularly those who don’t need to use the terms very often, forget or don’t know which term is the one that they currently need to use to be polite. So they’ll just see them as meaning the same thing and assume that it’s more polite to have to have a word with gender in than sex in.

What the definition doesn’t say explicitly is that in 80% of cases the individuals will keep all their birth genitalia. I think there is a reason that it wasn’t mentioned and if it had been made clear then it would have impacted the results much more than the definition given (assuming the same was given to respondents as the article).

ComputerSaysMo · 11/03/2019 21:20

I’d have also agreed with that statement before I realised what the TRA cult means when they say “living as your preferred gender.” I thought it meant giving my kids a choice of toys and not forcing them to play with stereotypical ones only. Puberty blockers never crossed my mind!

MrsTerryPratcett · 11/03/2019 21:25

Are they just talking about toys, clothes and names or do they mean blockers?

I'm willing to bet most assume the former.

terfsandwich · 11/03/2019 21:26

"Live out" to me implies a permanent choice, I. E. Live out your life until death.

Lemoncakestrudel · 12/03/2019 03:44

When did playing with dinosaurs become a boy thing?
