Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Twitter is weird

I have very little Twitter experience.

This evening I replied to a tweet by a supporter of Rachel McKinnon. I politely disagreed. Honestly!

I've had quite a few retweets and likes and supportive messages (80 something). Which is great.

The person I replied to and Rachel
McKinnon instantly blocked me.

I really was naive to think there might be an actual discussion, wasn't I?

Polite disagreement is the same as a death-threat. Only people who hate Rachel and want Rachel to die right now would dream of questioning the absolute truth of every word Rachel says.

Mrskeats · 10/03/2019 23:33

That creature will not debate anyone; complete nutter.

howmanybiscuits · 10/03/2019 23:38

Soon you'll find yourself blocked by people you've never interacted with.

The transcult don't like questions or debate - the hashtag #nodebate is one of theirs.

McKinnon blocks about 70,000 people IIRC (not an exaggeration!) so you're in good company.

IHeartKingThistle · 10/03/2019 23:40

70,000 Shock

I don't get it. I want to hear what people have to say. It's how I learn. I just can't understand this shutting down of debate, it's so harmful.

Agree I've blocked a handful of people, mainly advertisers like William Hill. I'll sometimes transiently block pests but then unblock them a few days later when they've moved on. If you only want to talk to people with similar opinions then why bother with Twitter? I think you have to be very insecure to be that afraid and intolerant of different opinions.

howmanybiscuits · 10/03/2019 23:52

Trans ideology is a cult. It's built on lies and half truths.

The ideas don't stand up to scrutiny. The only way it can propagate to successfully if for people to be trained that shut down others who question or object. It's fascistic.

It's terrifying how quickly this culture has taken hold, and has people who previously seemed rational believing the most preposterous nonsense.

Doyoumind · 11/03/2019 00:01

It's actually gone up to 80,000, so McKinnon boasted earlier today.

It's rare for McKinnon to get more than a few responses by the looks of it. When there are a significant number, the majority are negative responses.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/03/2019 01:23

Here's how Rachel's block list increases

Twitter is weird
Auldspinster · 11/03/2019 01:27

I'm on a block list in spite of never interacting with them.

Iused2BanOptimist · 11/03/2019 03:49

That'll be because you follow someone who has, as explained in that tweet. It's extraordinary really. Just mass blocking people who have had no interaction like that.

DpWm · 11/03/2019 07:15

It's also completely counter productive, deliberately removing yourself from so many conversations like that, so no one can hear your pov except people who already agree with you.

YY to "cult" comment above.

CorbynsAnorak · 11/03/2019 07:39

I’m really starting to wonder how people who appear to have zero critical thinking abilities, incredibly black and white thinking, and unwillingness to engage in conversations about their beliefs are able to achieve PhDs. Something is going seriously wrong in the world of higher education.

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 11/03/2019 07:41

I find it all astonishing

BareBelliedSneetch · 11/03/2019 07:54

I’ve been blocked by McKinnon. I’ve never interacted with them, or tweeted anything remotely related. I do follow some GC people, which is why I’m blocked, I assume. I also follow some TRA types. Following someone doesn’t mean I agree with them. How peculiar to think it would!

GabrielleNelson · 11/03/2019 08:07

In the long run, this will hurt the ideologues. They believe they have a lot of support because they never see, let alone engage with, most of the responses to what they say. As soon as the general public is exposed to the more extreme TRA views it's very clear indeed that most people don't accept it. So eventually, surely, we'll get back to some sort of normality and common sense. Children and women's sport will be the sticking points.

But unfortunately along the way a good many people in the media and politics have drunk the Kool-Aid and are happy to parrot TWAW etc etc with no critical thinking at all. By the time they or their superiors finally move away from this they will leave a lot of collateral damage behind, mainly to vulnerable people like young gender nonconforming children and teens, women prisoners, women in refuges, girls whose chance of a top sporting career is lost because the time has passed.

I just don't understand how we've come to this.

IHeartKingThistle · 11/03/2019 08:18

Urgh.

Ok then, who do I need to follow on Twitter?
