Meet with your local councilor - it's worth it.

Today I went to see my local councilor at the drop in surgery. He's a mental health specialist and was aghast when I informed him of the 4,000% increase in referrals to Tavistock. I brought him the report by Transgender Trend about Tavistock experimenting on children, and I asked him to urgently get their policy document reviewed that is on their website; it contains advice to schools about trans pupils, and it endorses puberty blockers.

So! I would encourage you to do the same. Check out your council's policies and pop into your local surgery. Tell them they are endorsing experimentation on children, if their advice to schools mentions puberty blockers. That ought to wake a few people up; not many people can blithely accept child experimentation in the name of progressive inclusivity.

Oh I've done this.

They don't care.

Brexit and local planning is all they care about.

AverageAvenger · 10/03/2019 00:46

RedToothBrush - absolutely not true.

Although a councillor would not be doing their job if they didn’t care about local planning.

In Leeds we have an entire political independent party whose councillors vehemently support the Nordic Model and are gender critical. They are in regular contact with Julie Bindel and also support WPUK.

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2019 00:49

No.

It is true.

Or are you telling me you were there for the conversation I've repeatedly had with my local councillors?

They just told me they didn't believe it and pretty much that i was being ridiculous.

But call me a liar if you like.

AverageAvenger · 10/03/2019 01:03

Huh?

Sorry, by “they” I thought you meant all councillors. Which I think is fairly obvious. No big deal. Confused

OccasionalKite · 10/03/2019 01:12

Maybe it depends on the councillors in one's area, and the influences they've been subjected to?

It's worth exploring.

GrimDamnFanjo · 10/03/2019 01:20

I would expect local councillors to be parochial tbh having been one myself. Unless it involves council services ....

ErrSoYeah · 10/03/2019 01:26

My councillor isn't interested either. Women don't matter.

ErrSoYeah · 10/03/2019 01:26

My MP doesn't care either.

Persifleur · 10/03/2019 01:44

Haven't been inclined to approach mine as they're both Lib Dems and likely wokier than woke but both have children so it's possibly worth a try.
Urgh.

MNSDKHheroines · 10/03/2019 06:06

Our council has 50% female councillors so I think it might be worth trying.

EweSurname · 10/03/2019 06:39

I know a woman who is an evalengical Christian, and who holds beliefs I wouldn’t expect to be compatible with the Lib Dems, who is a Lib Dem local councillor so don’t write yours off without meeting them!

RedemptiveCrocodile · 10/03/2019 08:32

It's worth at least writing to them, surely!

It is always worth writing or talking to them, not least because most like to maximise their chance of winning. SOme will be totally dismissive, some will totally get in and some might start to think more deeply. Face to face can be good as well as some it seems were wary of putting anything in writing just in case their party bossses see what they think.

Lumene · 10/03/2019 11:33

Thanks will do. I think it depends on the councillor and is worth a try.

theOtherPamAyres · 10/03/2019 22:30

Words are cheap.

We have to judge people on what they do, when in power.

Lots of MPs said the right things when women went to see them about the GRA. Only one has been prepared to rock the boat.

I've spoken to both councillors (different parties) representing my ward. They made the right noises. They took away my 'briefing paper' and pamphlets from FairPlayforWomen.

The Council is a top Stonewall Champion, with Allsorts Schools resource packs advertised on its website. It has removed 'sex' as a protected characteristic, in favour of 'gender identity'. It commissions buildings with 'mixed sex' changing rooms.

I will spoil my ballot paper at the local May election. Words were cheap and there was no action from either of them.

RedemptiveCrocodile · 11/03/2019 07:14

Maybe it's time to start a website with a list of all these people - how they've been informed that children are being experimented on, and they've done nothing.

Woman's Place UK values feedback on any meetings with councillors.

It has a very good guide on how to handle meetings with councillors, with background information on such things as the Equality Act and the Public Sector Equality Duty. It's not wordy. It's not long. It's invaluable, in my opinion.

Councillors and candidates are gearing up for the local council elections in May. It's a good time to buttonhole them over the Woman and Girl Question.

RedemptiveCrocodile · 12/03/2019 12:52

Very helpful, thank you theOtherPamAyres.

And I think it's an important point to remind our elected politicians - we are responsible for getting them into office (well, possibly)

Just an update - as a result of the conversation with my councilor, the Council is reviewing their trans schools policy document.

Please speak to your local councilors.
