Just. Sigh.

Massive eye roll.

A woman would have been lambasted for not sorting childcare and daring to be a parent and a student.

Doglikeme · 05/03/2019 09:41

I'd usually agree but I don't think this is to do with the fact that he's a man? He's gone above the call of duty here, a lot of mums don't / can't go back into education when they have a child which creates so many of the issues we are fighting as women, this person has made sure his student can continue to study? Why make this a bad thing?

Doglikeme · 05/03/2019 09:41

I understand this is the father but the point stands.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 05/03/2019 09:43

Just asked DH & a mum brought a baby to his class back in 2012...all day session for professional exams. She had no choice, so they managed but clearly didn't stick it all over social media.

RJnomore1 · 05/03/2019 09:44

I think it’s more about the teachers approach than the father isn’t it. If this was standard practice it would make life so much easier (maybe not holding the baby but being able to take them)
Although I’m sure I remember a news article about an oxford student who took her baby to all her classes years and years back 20 years or more possibly

killpop · 05/03/2019 09:46

I didn't read it like that at all.
Like it says in the article, it's a demonstration that more affordable childcare is needed.

PreseaCombatir · 05/03/2019 09:48

Looking at this, it seems like they’re more praising the tutor, who held the baby so that the father could take ‘good notes’.
I think it’s nice to see tbh, just one of those things that have gone viral from being shared, and then gets reported on.
Reminds me of the female firefighter who was in the news for breastfeeding that hungry baby at the hospital.

FFSFFSFFS · 05/03/2019 09:49

The Daily Mail one is a man too.

If someone can find something similar where its a female teacher looking after the bubba I will take note...

I don't think the conscious point is that its about a man doing it - i.e. that's not the point of the article - I think it the subconscious bias. If it was a woman doing it it wouldn't be news.

Oh look - it's a man holding a baby again. Above and beyond.

Another man holding a baby going above and beyond

Okay I googled. There is one woman. Among otherwise all men.

Anyway. That's my morning well spent. Back to work I go.

I'm not a sure a female teacher would do it

For a variety of reasons

GregoryPeckingDuck · 05/03/2019 10:18

There was a way better story doing the rounds a few years ago it’s otofessor holding one of his students babies when her childcare fell through at the last minute.

LivLemler · 05/03/2019 10:30

I'm a lecturer, just back after maternity leave. I'm sure if I did this I'd be viewed as soft, baby crazy etc. Plus probably hauled in for a disciplinary as I'm sure babies aren't allowed in our teaching rooms.

There's also no way I'd give as good a lecture as usual, disadvantaging the other 45 students in the room...

It's only a story because the picture of the baby-holding lecturer went viral, rather than something to do with the father, I'm guessing if it were a mum who had brought the baby in the photo would have still made the news.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/03/2019 18:55

Thread title is very misleading.

My extensive google research indicates that almost all the "teacher holding baby aren't they wonderful" pictures are men apart from one woman.

So? It's a nice story. Why does everything have to women versus men? The father showed up to take the exam (awesome) and the teacher helped him do that. (also awesome). If it inspires people, great.

Loopytiles · 05/03/2019 19:16

It’s not a “nice story” if it perpetuates bias. Or the tutor’s teaching was less good, impacting on the rest of the attendees, some of whom may well have been through childcare difficulties.

FFSFFSFFS · 05/03/2019 19:33

@deydododatdodontdeydo

How is it misleading?

OP posts:
FFSFFSFFS · 05/03/2019 19:34

@Stargazer888 because it demonstrates how subconsciously men and women are treated differently. This is important because it is mostly to the detriment of women.

My daughter attended the odd lesson at Uni, one lecturer walked up and down the platform so I could take notes, whilst giving a lecture I had severe PND and dd wouldn't take a bottle, despite both nursery and health visitors help. I was exhausted I’ll always be grateful to him, this was many years ago now.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/03/2019 19:51

How is it misleading?

There's a lot more to the story than "a man looks after a baby".
