I don’t follow much in this debate but was dismayed by this story.

Appreciate the finer details might have been left out but basically it is presented that a little boy wore two towels after his bath and wanted to wear dresses and make up and boom, he is transgender. Talk about creating a problem. The pictures are also ridiculous. Also, I assume the make up is just for play, because which 9 year old (girls or boys) are going about wearing make up in real life? Why can’t children simply be allowed to be themselves instead of having to stay in a tight box from which, if they deviate, they are construed as OTHER. Do better, BBC

At least it says at the bottom "NHS says most treatment at this stage is psychological and not surgical, because the majority of children with suspected gender dysphoria do not have the condition once they reach puberty. It says a child refusing to wear typical boys' or girls' clothes is usually just part of growing up... "

Yes I noticed that Candid

I didn’t! By that stage I was too riled. That’s good I guess. But then I don’t understand why the story makes the news…

I have such an issue with them framing it as a psychological problem that they will grow out of. It’s over 20 years since David Beckham wore a sarong and we’ve regressed rather than progressed. Plenty of cultures have skirts and dresses for men (Scottish kilts, Arabic robes to name two) so why is it a problem for boys to contravene our gender norms and want to wear skirts and dresses? I bought my daughters school trousers from the boy section rather than the girl section as the girls’ version didn’t have pockets (obvs) and the boys’ were warmer with reinforced knees. Am I “cross-dressing” them?

This is child abuse. Imagine the trauma these kids are going to have as adults, this is Borderline Personality Disorder (unstable sense of self) being created.

And with the world as an audience... poor kid. Crazy days we are in.

that article is riddled with sexist tropes, I can't understand how it has been published, and also how Autumn's mother doesn't have social services breathing down her neck.

FWIW, my 9 year old DD doesn't care about make up (wears it once a year for the school disco), uses one towel and informed me just last night that she has no intention of getting married, having sex or having a baby (she might adopt one but they'll be no dad, oh no Grin). Oh god, she must be a boy.

Fuck Off BBC. Just fuck off.

(I've had another totally shit response to my complaint about Nic being vetoed by RM, they really couldn't give a crap, could they?)

The makeup is disturbing. It's an idea of femininity very prevalent in the extremely gendered media that children (and all of us) are exposed to. I hate to say it wasn't as bad as it is now back in my day, but it wasn't! I feel like we've taken one step forward and two back...
