55 women killed by men they had reported to the police

In a three year time period 55 women are known to have been killed by men they had reported to the police as harassing/abusing/stalking them.

Unsurprisingly the highest number fell under West Yorkshire Police.

But, y'know, the men are innocent until proven guilty and that's more important Angry

WTF is it with WYP?

OMGithurts · 04/03/2019 12:54

The article says 30 forces out of 45 provided stats, so it's fairly safe to assume the number is quite a bit higher especially as the Met didn't give details.

The article says 30 forces out of 45 provided stats, so it's fairly safe to assume the number is quite a bit higher especially as the Met didn't give details.

Sadly I'm guessing some will have also dropped through the net due to moving force area etc. That is why I chose the word known in my OP.

It is utterly utterly sad and depressing.

These are the cases WYP should be handing to the CPS for court action.

McTufty · 04/03/2019 13:05

Absolutely shocking, presumably at least some of this lack of action is due to resource issues. Which makes me damn furious when you consider some of the crap the police spend money on.

Popchyk · 04/03/2019 13:10

"Some police forces performed worse than others when it came to protecting women from domestic abusers and stalkers. Nine women under the jurisdiction of West Yorkshire Police—the fourth largest police force in England and Wales—were killed by their partner, ex-partner or stalker over the last three years despite reporting them to the police. Two deaths occurred in 2015, four in 2016, and three in 2017".

But they were swift enough to send two officers to travel to Essex in order to interview Miranda Yardley for a Twitter spat. Because priorities.

Mner2019 · 04/03/2019 13:55

This is horrific. Those poor families

SirVixofVixHall · 04/03/2019 14:14

What is it with WYP ? There seems something very wrong there.

Lougle · 04/03/2019 14:24

You can get the full breakdown on unfollowme.vice.com Unfollow Me.]] It's interesting. Hampshire is quite a big county and has 0 deaths. Other areas are smaller and have higher numbers. I'd imagine that the numbers would all be considered too low to be statistically significant, though?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 04/03/2019 14:28

This gives me the rage . And surely it is time that WYP are investigated for misuse of public funds - they appear only to offer a service to a certain section of the community and it's evidently not women.

SomeDyke · 04/03/2019 16:36

I just saw this story:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-47444983

Murdered his wife Geraldine Newman and their two children. Although family claim he wasn't a violent man, turns out he had served a jail sentence for a two day assault on his wife.

I'm rather annoyed by what the coroner said about him:
"We can see a relatively isolated gentleman, with some propensity to compulsive behaviour, being overwhelmed by a situation that was likely to deprive him of his children, who were so fundamentally important to him"

West Yorkshire again.

Poor bloke, loved his kids, implied possible issues with medication blah blah blah, anything but controlling bastard annihilates family when they tried to escape him and his violence.

whatnow123 · 04/03/2019 17:08

There are no easy answers. Restraining orders, bail conditions, warnings are frequently ignored.

Victims may call the Police but never support a prosecution. They may return to abusive relationships.

A lot is put on the Police, however, we are a tiny part of the picture.

OrchidInTheSun · 04/03/2019 17:41

And let's not forget it was WYP who harassed Posie too. Shame they're better at dealing with vexatious complaints about words on a screen than actual violent.

bialystockandbloom · 04/03/2019 19:48

somedyke I read that story just now and was about to start a thread on it! Totally fucking disgusting the spotlight being on the cunt poor man who did this, and the reporting as so tragic as his wife hadn't even had an affair - such pointless murders then of her and her children, as of course if she had had an affair it would've been worth it Angry Angry

Also the statement by the coroner that "no-one foresaw what was to happen" despite him previously serving a sentence for a 2-day long attack on her

JFC.

I'm drafting a complaint to the bbc about this now. ALL this article reports is the murderer's side, including the view of his sister that he was only violent because he'd seen texts from other men on his wife's phone - was there nothing from the victims family the bbc could report on??

Njordsgrrrl · 04/03/2019 20:11

The reporting on family annihilators is almost always disgraceful. This dangerous serial offender is described as a "gentleman" Jesus wept, I despair.

SardineQueenII · 04/03/2019 20:44

'Victims may call the Police but never support a prosecution. They may return to abusive relationships.'

Never?

SardineQueenII · 04/03/2019 20:46

Thanks for sharing the article.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 04/03/2019 20:51

Absolutely shocking, presumably at least some of this lack of action is due to resource issues.

I wouldn't bank on it. The police have never been particularly good for women. I wouldn't give them any excuse, they are just men like any other. The only thing that will start to produce change is when most of the police force are women imho.
