Whistleblowing in the nhs is a career-ending thing to do, regardless of how justified

Indeed it is, but Marcus Evans has been at the Trust for 35 years, and no doubt did other work within the NHS before then (he cites a 40 year career). I expect he's able to draw his pension and will top it up with freelance work like writing articles criticising the treatment his ex colleagues are still giving out.

He knows the wind is changing direction and is battening down to protect his reputation.

Rod Liddle is a dog whistle right wing toad.
We need better allies...

Which better allies? The men who declare themselves to be our allies while simultaneously telling us that there is nuance about this debate - aka who is and isn't a woman?

There isn't any nuance. It's a zero sum game.

teawamutu · 02/03/2019 13:11

bumpertobumper in theory I agree, but if there's one thing I've learned this past year or so it's that the organisations I thought were my allies, in the tribal, 'this is my club' sense, aren't. They're all busy swigging the koolaid and trying to be woke and progressive.

So am now in position of refusing to align myself with people who don't give a fuck about me, and accepting that I can line up with people on one subject even if I dislike their views on everything else.

Don't know if that's shamefully opportunistic or pragmatic and mature, but it's where I am.

I’ve never liked Liddle, but in comparison with Owen Jones, Liddle is Andrea Dworkin. I’m only just realising how many supposedly left wing men really despise women.

And where can we find them, bumper?

LangCleg · 02/03/2019 13:40

Are the better allies the men of the left who think we should legalise prostitution and relax porn restrictions? Why would such a man be a better ally?

nauticant · 02/03/2019 13:41

We need better allies...

We need people from all parts of the political spectrum speaking up about this. Including nice people everyone approves of and not so nice people. That includes Liddle, however unpleasant he is.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 02/03/2019 13:49

Liddle writes with the same passion and fury that so many women display as we look at what is happening to our children. Once I see the left wing press and politicians start mentioning the real harm that is being done to children, let alone taking action, then I might start bleating about the nature of allies. Until then, I'll acknowledge everyone calling out this abuse.

We need better allies

Sharing a critical take on a set of concepts doesn't equal sharing a tribal affiliation

RiotAndAlarum · 02/03/2019 14:49

I haven't read the Rod Liddle article yet, but must say that I found Marcus Evans so humane and thoughtful: we really need more approaches like this! The line about standing up to pressure also hits hard. To some extent, this involves a capacity to remain empathetic to the child’s distress, but to also stand up to pressure coming from various sources

Popchyk · 02/03/2019 15:18

"Considering the lack of clinical evidence for the drugs used, one might question why the national service (which has been going for 30 years) hasn’t yet undertaken a research study or even collected basic follow-up outcome data?"

I think that is a great point.

According to Marcus Evans, there has been no research study done at GIDS, and GIDS has been saying that there is "sparse evidence" for treatment.

And yet it has been operating for 30 years. Why then is there sparse evidence? Surely they can look at their own data? Why aren't they following up on ALL patients?
