www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/03/01/equalities-minister-shock-polarised-views-trans-rights/

Quite a lot to unpick here, and while she's not 100% full-on TRA, she's most of the way there.

"I think what we have to realise is, the Gender Recognition Act was passed in 2004, some 15 years ago, and we’re not trying to go [back].

Some people are trying to reverse-engineer what’s gone on, but what we want is a less bureaucratic process in future for transgender people"

"But, I am sensitive to some of the situations [i.e. rapes] that have gone on, that actually have compromised people.

Is that because the people are transgender, or is that because of the types of people that they are?

I think we’ve got to take a level-headed approach to this and not take one event as the basis for legislation or changing the system."

Nah rape victims don’t matter. They just upset the scheme of things....Angry

OvaHere · 01/03/2019 14:47

No point in calling them single sex in that case.

Bluestitch · 01/03/2019 14:48

I just posted a thread on this too, the thing that surprised me was the shock that women might object to this. The impact on women just really didn't occur to them at all did it? They put forward this proposal thinking it would be an easy way to be viewed as progressive and now those pesky women objecting to rapists being put in women's prisons have thrown a spanner in the works.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/03/2019 14:49

Yes of course single sex spaces should be trans inclusive.

If you are male and think you are a woman then just go to the mens loos - surely we just need to make men more accepting of other blokes who dress and act 'differently'.

Problem solved. Thank you.

There's quite a bit of noise coming from various official quarters. I'm feeling pessimistic. Decisionmakers are still in their bubbles.

"In an interview with PinkNews, the junior government minister acknowledged the “polarised views on this issue,” but said the government will forge ahead with creating a “less bureaucratic process in future for transgender people.
Denying claims that Brexit has led to policy delays, the Baroness said plans for changes to gender recognition laws will progress “in the next 12 months.”

Yes, let's be level headed and balance out the rights and concerns of a few female victims of sexual assault and the desires of a few people who really want to be in a prison for people of the opposite sex. Because that's how us respectable types view things like equality and justice.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/03/2019 14:55

OOh wow

This part about "situations" that have arisen and a link to an example (Karen White) response is:

"Is that because the people are transgender, or is that because of the types of people that they are?"

Well Karen White was a convicted rapist so yes of course it's do do with "the sort of" person that they are.
The response seems to imply that women do it too / therefore although Karen is a threat it's because of "who they are" and not because trans which is true obviously but the fact Karen is trans is the reason they were in a female prison in the first place where most would argue they should not be but this person seems to be "women do it too" so why not...

Anyway
What I was shocked by was I read that bit and noted link to karen white they had included then the very next bit was

"Q. The Ministry of Justice is reviewing a policy that states trans women should be placed in women’s prisons in the first instance. In the past, we’ve seen trans women in men’s prisons take their own lives. Do you worry that reversing the current policy could lead to that?"

How CRASS is that?

Women dont' matter AT ALL do they.

Needmoresleep · 01/03/2019 14:57

I wonder if she would have given the same interview to the Daily Mail?

Politician 101...count your votes.

DoctoressPlague · 01/03/2019 15:00

We should make sure that single-sex spaces, which they have been since 2004, are trans inclusive.

The Baroness hasn't read the Equality Act.

RockyFlintstone · 01/03/2019 15:10

"But, I am sensitive to some of the situations [i.e. rapes] that have gone on, that actually have compromised people.

Is that because the people are transgender, or is that because of the types of people that they are?

I don't get this question? What does it matter?

I think we’ve got to take a level-headed approach to this and not take one event as the basis for legislation or changing the system."

Wasnt the legislation around CRB checks massively tightened up as a direct result of Ian Huntley slipping through the net?

Artesia · 01/03/2019 15:21

I had a response from Baroness Williams after I raised concerns re the GRA. It wasn’t in the slightest reassuring. Will try to anonymise and post shortly

IDoN0tCare · 01/03/2019 15:28

not take one event as the basis for legislation or changing the system

Unless that event was a trans person having their feelings hurt, of course. That’s really really serious!
