B.C. court rules transboy should be given testosterone, against father's wishes

nationalpost.com/news/canada/transgender-teen-can-proceed-with-hormone-treatment-despite-fathers-objections-b-c-court-rules

The arguments are:

  • a 14-year-old is fully capable of consenting to 'his own medical treatments', i.e. cross-sex hormones
  • the judge said that if the testosterone is not administered the child might attempt suicide (again)
  • the father said 'the child does not understand the risks and consequences of the gender transition treatment, and the harm that can come to the child,'
  • the mother said 'If his treatment is put on hold, I am terrified that A.B. will conclude there is no hope and will take his life.'

The judge ruled:

  • the father's expert evidence about potential harms from gender transition was inadmissible as it was general rather than specific to the child
  • calling the child by female pronouns, or suggesting that the 'gender transition' not take place, will be regarded as 'family violence' (the father has joint custody)

Elizabeth Saewyc, from UBC school of nursing, said the ruling:

'reinforced that delaying or refusing care for young people with gender dysphoria “is not neutral, it can have health consequences,"'

This is the child's doctor:

Wallace is the author of 'When Kathy is Keith' (and also 'It's So Gay and It's Ok')

www.straight.com/life/when-kathy-keith-surrey-psychologist-wallace-wong-releases-transgender-childrens-book which is about a girl who says she is a boy but people don't take her (him) seriously

Dr. Wong recommended that the child in this case be put on testosterone in 2018.

Wallace Wong has a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Brigham Young University Hawaii (Mormon university)

When I was 14-15 I wanted to be a nun

Ha. We were shown "The Nun's Story" at a school film show when I was about 12. We took to confessing our sins to each other and wanted to be naughty nuns so our confessions naturally became imaginative.

I do love that film though. Audrey at her best.

Meanwhile DD2 announced her desire to be a nun in school assembly age 8 causing much hilarity among the teachers as it took the wind out of the sails of the teacher taking the assembly as the chosen topic was vocation and a particular famous nun but the lead in was asking pupils what they wanted to be when they grew up hence DD and her announcement, preempting the teacher's topic for the day. Luckily they didn't take her at her word and pack her off to a convent. Grin

Thanks QCM I’m in Oz, so maybe reporting restrictions but I can follow the gist from what you, and other pps have said.

It’s scary how easy adults paint this course of action to children / young adults. And no worries if you change your mind again later Hmm

From your link ‘Consumer Health Day’; the front page top 3 articles (after the one you’ve linked above) are all about the possible added health risks with giving cross sex hormones.
consumer.healthday.com/sexual-health-information-32/transgender-1001/
This is the first time I’ve seen such bald figures eg under the heart risks article
“Among the almost 1,400 trans men (assigned female at birth but with male gender identity) who were tracked for an average of eight years, researchers saw a tripling of heart attack risk compared to women.”

There's a bit here with some more detail

www.conservativewoman.co.uk/a-fathers-rights-sacrificed-on-the-transgender-altar/

"The girl’s parents are divorced and the first her father knew about his daughter Maxine’s gender confusion was when he found her referred to as Quinn in her school year book. She was then aged 12.

Maxine’s school district in Delta, British Columbia, had decided that ‘Quinn’ should be treated, for all intents and purposes, as a boy. Her school counsellor, who had encouraged her to identify as a boy, helped choose the new name."

"The school district was operating by the BC Ministry of Education’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy, according to which parents have no right to know their child’s ‘preferred sex, gender, or name’ at school.

Maxine’s father did not reject her transgender decision outright. He had no problem with her exploring the role of being male. He even bought her a transgender pride flag for her room. It was the irreversible effects of testosterone treatment which disturbed him.

Maxine had struggled emotionally with her parents’ separation, exhibiting behavioural problems and depression. During the school year when she took on a transgender identity, as well as being removed from one class for stalking a male teacher, Maxine had apparently also gone through a lesbian phase. "

"During her first hospital visit, Dr Brenden Hursh and his colleagues decided Maxine should begin having testosterone injections to develop a more masculine appearance. The hospital staff asked Maxine’s parents for permission to begin testosterone treatment. Her father refused to sign.

After failing to persuade him to give permission, the hospital eventually declared they didn’t need parental permission anyway. On December 1, 2018, Dr Hursh informed Maxine’s father that testosterone injections would begin in two weeks on the basis of the child’s consent alone. They argued that Maxine, by now 14, was a ‘mature minor,’ who could receive treatment against the wishes of both her parents, according to section 17 of the BC Infants Act."

Absolutely sick and insane.

Why is it always Canada?

When I was 14 I wanted to be a lorry driver. But it had to be a pink lorry. I actually said that to my careers teacher. She said I should be a librarian. Without asking me a single thing about interests of anything. I have no idea why..

Lol @girldownunder just saw your nun comment.

Update to this.

thefederalist.com/2019/04/01/doctor-advises-threatening-suicide-get-transgender-treatments-kids/#.XKIjnkTZMIM.twitter

The psychologist who deemed Maxine transgender is psychologist Wallace Wong.

"On February 28, the day after Bowden’s decision was released, Wong spoke at an event hosted by Vancouver Public Library. In a tape of the event obtained by Canadian pro-family group Culture Guard, Wong is heard proudly describing the scope of his children-only “gender therapy” practice, noting that his youngest client is not yet three years old and that he has 501 orphans and foster kids in his local practice".

"Wong also had some startling advice for a parent seeking to get a child referred to his program. Although the questioner had not indicated any particular urgency, Wong explained that parents should exaggerate the severity of their child’s condition to their local health offices.

Wong said a suicide threat was an effective means of accomplishing this goal. While Wong framed the matter as the government’s fault and explained to his audience that it is “up to us as advocates” to change the situation, his message could not have been lost on anyone present.

“So what you need is, you know what? Pull a stunt. Suicide, every time, [then] they will give you what you need,” Wong said, adding that gender-dysphoric kids “learn that. They learn it very fast.”

NotBadConsidering · 03/04/2019 04:20

That is absolutely horrific. Who is safeguarding those kids?

Both the case of Maxine and the alleged comments by Wong are shocking.

NotBadConsidering · 03/04/2019 22:03

I’ve made a start on the video, it’s an hour and a half long, but so far it starts out sensible. He talks about how damaging gender stereotypes are, how children are easily persuaded by social contagion, and how the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria aren’t appropriate, uses stereotypes inappropriately and would encompass many of today’s adults, particularly gay ones like himself. So I’ll keep my mind open until I’ve finished the whole thing.

ChattyLion · 04/04/2019 08:35

I haven’t looked at the specific arguments from the judge in detail but ‘your arguments are invalid because they’re not specific to the individual is a very dodgy premise.

Medicine and science work on consensus of what generally happens to humans of roughly the same profile (age, sex, health factors) which are then calibrated by exception to the individual.

Here we do not make decisions in a vacuum of knowledge about prior typical human response- So it’s untrue that good medical decisions can only be individualised to the individual.

There are generalisable scientific and medical truths that apply to all patients. Outcomes you know will result whoever the person is. Like if you give a woman male hormones long enough, her womb cancer risk is elevated, so it may become unsafe not to give her a hysterectomy.

The individual human also does not typically have so many quirks and differences that they will not respond to treatment as typical humans do. Though of course there are exceptions.

Therefore it is all on those proposing drastic experimental treatments on young people to say why these won’t result in permanent adverse outcomes for that individual against all previous medical and scientific knowledge. It’s really not on the people calling for watchful waiting to justify that.
