at some pubs not only have I seen guys order "a pint of wife beater", the (male) bartender serves them with a smile. isn't this something that should be called out?

Yes, good idea. Next time you see it do call it out.

Middlrm · 28/02/2019 02:16

My grandad gives me the occasional can of Stella ( 35 years so allowed 🙃) he often refers to it as husband beater ... he also enjoys one from time to time... good news I don’t beat my husband and he doesn’t beat my nan .

It’s just a saying/ joke because it’s a strong larger and I think some people don’t react well .

Do you think you should call people out on it? X

BusterGonad · 28/02/2019 02:20

It's just a joke as it makes people angry, wife beater, angry fella etc. I find it hard to be offended!

Cheeseandapple · 28/02/2019 04:43

Tone of pp is odd to me op. I'm with you, what a horrible way to order a drink. It's a micro - aggression.

Yeahnahyeah · 28/02/2019 04:58

No different to the fish n chip shop called The Battered Wife. Misogyny is everywhere including some so called humour.

Illyria47 · 28/02/2019 05:41

I think I would question that term give the high rate of domestic abuse in NZ, plus the alcohol fuelled attacks by young men on young men, often leading to death or serious injury. I am with you on this one YeahnahYeah.

Lemoncakestrudel · 28/02/2019 07:55

I thought it was called that because you could tell which blokes were going to whack their missus, because they were drinking it. Apparently the clientele at a pub in Cambridge massively improved the moment they stopped selling Stella. Not sure if this is true...

Beamur · 28/02/2019 08:09

It's one of those jokes that just isn't funny.

RockyFlintstone · 28/02/2019 08:10

I have heard it referred to as 'wife beater', but not in the context of actually ordering one. That's horrible.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 28/02/2019 08:12

I'd be leaning on the bar beside him asking for a half of large misogynist wanker.

buzzbobbly · 28/02/2019 08:13

It is a silly, old, colloquial/joke name for Stella.

But it's more lame and unoriginal to actually order it by calling it that. Honest to god, it's not big or funny or clever. But by god I bet he thinks it is. i expect he likes 'banter' as well.

That makes him a bellend for more than the Stella comment.

RockyFlintstone · 28/02/2019 08:14

Yes, what buzzbobby just said.

AbsintheFriends · 28/02/2019 09:26

There's a certain type of misogynist who likes to signal how manly he is by making jokes like that to other men, to show that they know all about that culture, though of course they would never do anything like that themselves...

They just want women to remember that they could, if they chose to. If they were provoked.

silentcrow · 28/02/2019 09:30

Way back when I was a student working in a bar, the staff used to call it that as a warning to each other - as in, "watch out, that guy's three pints of wife-beater down before the footy even starts." Most unpleasant.
