Fascinating review of a book about how the world is designed for men. Research on everything from the temp in the office to safe levels of exposure to chemicals all done with men as the default human, with the consequences that put woman at risk.

It really starkly illustrates how far we still have to go.

It's a great article. I naively assumed that this sort of thing had died out over the last 50 years, it's quite a surprise that there's hardly even a female crash test dummy developed.
I know when I drive a transit van at work I have to pull the seat far forward to reach the peddles and my face is closer than 10 inches to the airbag, which would probably kill me if it went off in a collision.
Airbags can be a risk for women and children.

Interesting but I've never worked in an office where the average temperature is worked out by a formula.
All the time I worked in universities the heating went on on a certain date and off on a certain date, meaning there were times when it was too cold and times when it was too hot.
In situations where it could be controlled, women always had the control and instead of women wrapped in blankets, it was men rolling up their sleeves and wanting to open windows.

Women’s Hour have just been discussing this.

This was a thread I started a few days ago; quite a collection of experiences due to this.

I've just listed to the author on WH - Something she mentioned; researchers CBA or say it’s too expensive or difficult to test medicines on women because of their menstrual cycle.

There's a medicine designed to prevent heart attacks which actually is more likely to cause a heart attack at a certain point in a women’s cycle. Angry

I did look into this before and it's not quite as simple as that.
When testing a medicine, they want to remove external influences. So if you're on other medication you would be exluded from the trial, etc.
Also, they tent to exclude pregnant or potentially pregnant women, not because they CBA or it's too difficult, but because of potential catastrophic effects on an unborn child.
