Guardian "investigation" - Trans patients in England face 'soul destroying' wait for treatment

This'll be one of the reasons the Guardian didn't bother itself with the Stonewall/Hunt news etc.

They had this big, rather breathless, investigation to release today:
"Trans men and women are being left humiliated and desperate after seeking care from their GP, according to a Guardian investigation that has shed light on serious flaws in how the NHS treats transgender patients."

www.theguardian.com/society/2019/feb/26/trans-patients-in-england-face-soul-destroying-wait-for-treatment

Alongside this: www.theguardian.com/society/2019/feb/26/trans-man-woman-gp-care-healthcare

I have eye strain from them rolling so hard.

I will be very surprised if they've left the comments open.

ComputerSaysMo · 26/02/2019 10:20

Gosh, I’m glad other types of mental health support aren’t desperately underfunded in the UK and people never languish on waiting lists waiting for treatment. Oh wait...

It sounds awful, like many experiences of the overstretched, underfunded NHS:

hackmum · 26/02/2019 10:36

Nicola Davis is a science reporter and usually very good. Somewhat depressing that she's coming out with this stuff uncritically.

HerFemaleness · 26/02/2019 11:22

I do have empathy for those who are waiting years for assessments. My niece is half way through a two year wait for her initial assessment for Autism. There is underfunding, under-provision, lack of staffing across the board.

However, the article lists at least one person whose criticism seems to be that they couldn't just rock up their GP with a list of demands and have their GP immediately start filling out prescriptions. A large part of the problem seems to be unrealistic expectations of the health service.

nauticant · 26/02/2019 11:31

I wonder if anyone in the NHS has done any sums on what the cost would be to provide full therapeutic and medical support for trans people, according to the demands of trans activists. Say for several hundred thousand people.

There must be some people in the NHS who are realising their choices are to provide a failing service or an adequate service that is way beyond affordable.

Melroses · 26/02/2019 11:33

A large part of the problem seems to be unrealistic expectations of the health service.

The Edinburgh Action for Trans Health manifesto is a glorious collection of unrealistic expectation. I would have dismissed them as utter fantasists if ATH had not been invited to contribute to Maria Miller's enquiry via Jess.

ChickenonaMug · 26/02/2019 12:23

nauticant I am quite sure that the sums have been done by the NHS.
Dr James Palmer is/was leading on this and he is a member of NHS England’s Specialised Commissioning National Team.
In June 2018 the Telegraph reported *"The NHS must "be prepared" for nearly two million Britons to question their gender in coming years, a health boss has said.

James Palmer, the medical director for specialised services at NHS England, said in the future he expected up to three per cent of the population would make contact with transgender health services at some point in their lives."*

Beamur · 26/02/2019 12:28

Health services, especially mental health are stretched paper thin.
A friend of mine, who is suicidal, has been hospitalised from an attempt on her life last year has been told that there is a 2 year wait for therapy. If she manages to hold on until then.
It's appalling across the board for vulnerable and unwell people.

FloralBuntingIsObnoxious · 26/02/2019 12:29

It's very significant to use the phrase 'soul destroying' when the Genderist religion places so much emphasis on an internal sense of identity. It's a signal that these waits are So much more significant for trans issues, because it's a direct assault on their identity.
Weak attempt to assert trans supremacy in the hierarchy of oppression, basically. A predictable response given how much the sport and child protection issues this past couple of weeks have pushed back against the control the Genderists have wielded for so long.

BettyDuMonde · 26/02/2019 12:48

There is a 7 year wait for adult mental health service in Manchester.

This means that kids being transferred from CAMHS at 18 fall into a black hole and see no one until they are 25.

Ereshkigal · 26/02/2019 12:54

That's awful, Betty!

nauticant · 26/02/2019 12:58

I hesitated over my "several hundred thousand" ChickenonaMug but the "nearly two million ... up to three per cent of the population" is just mindboggling. I can't imagine the NHS surviving that.

I wonder what's going to give? Something will have to. And in a way that the gender identity explorers, in their hundreds of thousands or millions, are steered to somewhere other than the NHS.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 26/02/2019 13:19

A key issue is that delays in being seen at a GIC often puts a medical transition on hold – which is something trans men and women said jeopardises their physical and mental health.

Mental health I can just about accept; but what the hell physical harm comes to people if no medical intervention is undertaken on a patient with no physical malady?

OP posts:
nauticant · 26/02/2019 13:25

I'd guess self-harm.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 26/02/2019 13:33

Good grief. The author's Twitter is a study in wilful ignorance.

There's the article from my OP.
And then a RT quote (The idea of more and more women saying ‘fuck it’ and refusing to reshape themselves around what men want or are told to want even if it means they end up single is legitimately terrifying to patriarchy.)
Then compliments on another article about aggressive masculinity.
Then a RT for the "Celebrating Women in Chemistry Event".
It just gets ever more ridiculous. twitter.com/NicolaKSDavis

There really are none so blind....

nauticant that sounds like it's sailing suspiciously close to extortion though - "Give me the treatment I demand or I'll hurt myself."

Shotsfired this little document may interest you - it’s a trans guide to getting the NHS to do exactly what you want.

This is the kind of thing that the anonymous staff of the Tavi are hearing in the hallways when they report hearing parents coaching their kids on what to say.

NotTerfNorCis · 26/02/2019 13:44

Why do they think 3% of the population are trapped in the wrong bodies? Why has no society noticed this bizarre phenomenon until now?

FemalePersonator · 26/02/2019 13:53

I learnt a new word today: "cripping" (page 10).

Ereshkigal · 26/02/2019 13:58

nauticant that sounds like it's sailing suspiciously close to extortion though - "Give me the treatment I demand or I'll hurt myself."

Remember the FTM protest outside the DoH because all the mastectomies were inexplicably going to women with breast cancer.

#wontdiewaiting or similar. No you won't, but the cancer patients literally might.

OlennasWimple · 26/02/2019 14:05

I'm sure that the wait for treatment is awful for everyone affected. And by everyone, I mean all patients who face delays whether for cancer, gynae issues, mental health conditions or trans related treatment

The NHS is on its knees

CallMeSirShotsFired · 26/02/2019 14:05

I am tempering my words quite strongly to stay within posting guidelines.

OP posts:
HawayMan · 26/02/2019 14:06

I'm confused, I thought it wasn't a mental health condition?

If a woman is anyone who says they are, then why the need for surgery, hormones, etc.?
