Another fantastic Giliigan piece

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/governor-quits-blinkered-tavistock-clinic-82db7wzq8

A governor of the NHS trust that runs England’s only gender clinic for children has resigned in protest at its “blinkered” and “one-sided” response to doctors who had raised the alarm about “woefully inadequate” care.

Marcus Evans, a consultant psychotherapist at the Tavistock and Portman trust with three decades’ experience, told The Sunday Times that the trust had said things that were “not true”, had created a “climate of fear” and was trying to “dismiss or undermine” concerns raised by its own clinicians.

No mention of suicide from Mermaids, just being stopped from excelling at hobbies.

Sorry, my post above was in response to ItsAllGoingToBeFine.

Interesting to see this story get a brief mention on the papers review on Broadcasting House this morning. First time that’s happened.

nauticant · 24/02/2019 22:04

Yes, I heard that. Paddy O'Connell apologised for cutting off the discussion (it had run right up to the very end of the programme) and specifically asked listeners to let him know if the issue was one which Broadcasting House ought to cover in the future. My ears pricked up at that.

BlackForestCake · 24/02/2019 23:39

Perhaps both Evans and Hunt are aware that there is some reason the said shit/fan interface event horizon is about to arrive very soon and don't want to be in post when it does.

DonaldTwain · 25/02/2019 07:01

Sounds like this is being covered on Today after the news!

hackmum · 25/02/2019 07:39

Yes, Donald - I'm sitting through yet another tedious interview about Brexit waiting for the GIDS interview! I think it's an interview with Polly Carmichael, isn't it? Should be on any moment now.

hackmum · 25/02/2019 07:47

On now.

SlipperyLizard · 25/02/2019 07:48

I’m listening and hoping I don’t lose signal on the train!

Iused2BanOptimist · 25/02/2019 07:58

A lot of flannel from Marcus Evans to kick off.

Iused2BanOptimist · 25/02/2019 08:02

PC "people have to train on the job as there is no training in gender" (paraphrasing as I can't remember word for word). Whilst it is true a lot of medical work involves training on the job - you can't be a surgeon without practicing on someone, still I think the way she dropped that out suggests what a dearth if evidence based practice there is.

RedToothBrush · 25/02/2019 08:07

I'm not really into child experimentation. Especially without proper psychological support.

hackmum · 25/02/2019 08:14

I thought Marcus Evans was reasonably good - yes, a bit waffly, but he did get across the point about children being susceptible to outside pressure. Polly Carmichael simply dodged most of the difficult questions.

nettie434 · 25/02/2019 08:25

And now Martha Kearney has asked Damian Hinds (Education Secretary) about the need for independent oversight of the Tavistock. He gave a bit of a waffly reply but good he was asked.

Iused2BanOptimist · 25/02/2019 08:25

Yes he did get some points across whilst talking about difficult decisions, treatments with long term consequences or whatever he said but I do think the public need it spelled out what that treatment involves and what those long term consequences are.
Everyone talks in euphemisms and hints etc, they are all masters of sophistry.

DodoPatrol · 25/02/2019 08:57

Damien Hinds said that it was complex and difficult to understand, but didn't say why, in that case, it's suitable to explain in short words for five-year-olds.
