New resturant opened in our village.

Seeing this ad just makes me sigh.

Is it worth me calling to say i wont be dining there because of their sexist marketing?

A resturant... Food would be a better campaign surely?

It's badly done, but the woman is actually a singer performing on the Turkish Nights, rather than a generic belly dancing woman. The other events are all music evenings too, although not immediately obvious either.

The restaurant and village is easily identifiable btw.

They should have credited the singer and made it clear she was performing on the music evening. That's the sexism issue here for me. Maybe you could contact them and point out they should have used the singer's name and not just her image.

Who is Blue, I wonder?

And why do they get a whole night to themselves?

Onacleardayyoucansee · 19/02/2019 19:19

What makes you think shes the singer?

Just looks like a list of whats on and token female to me.

Thanks for your input.
Hadnt considered she is a singer.

She's apparently called Melisa Gosen and is part of the act that is performing on one of the music evenings. If you check the restaurant's website.

Let it go. Really. Otherwise, it dilutes the seriousness of real sexism. It’s complaining about stuff like this that gives ‘feminism’ a bad name , IMO.

SlipperyLizard · 19/02/2019 20:31

I couldn’t see past the rogue apostrophe to notice the scantily clad woman. That made me wince (the apostrophe).

I’m struggling to find any outrage for this in the context of the other threads right now.

GenderIsAPrison · 19/02/2019 20:43

Also. That’s belly dancing for you. It is what it is.
It’s scantily clad, but it’s not stripping or pole dancing.

No worse than your average night of Strictly Come Dancing, which is considered family TV.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/02/2019 21:21

"It’s complaining about stuff like this that gives ‘feminism’ a bad name"

Well, no, it's people that dislike feminism and/or are misogynists who try and do this, based on anything that women say. Somehow this is taken to represent all feminists. I wouldn't advise anyone to stop talking about sexism or asking people to consider whether something is sexist or not, based on this idea that somehow it might give feminism a bad name.

It would put me off going to the restaurant. It looks tacky and it makes me think the food wouldn't be very good.

This is the full picture from the website. It would still put me off for reasons above. I don't like music in restaurants unless it is (a) taped non- challenging classical music (not that I'm particularly upset by challenging music but there is a time and a place for Messiaen and over dinner isn't it) (b) taped obscure indie/ Americana/Alt Country (paticularly if I recognise it) both played at a level where one can still hear a conversation or (c) live piano as long as it's not the cocktail variety.

TBF the OP has labelled this everyday sexism, she's not saying it's the number one priority that feminists should have right now. I understand your annoyance OP. The little things all bubble up don't they. Sometimes it's little things like this that just push your buttons and you need to vent. Vent away x

deydododatdodontdeydo · 20/02/2019 09:31

I'd let it go.
They're using a picture of one of the acts to advertise the music.
They could have used the picture of the bloke, but then we'd have yet another male-oriented advert showing male music stars.

Onacleardayyoucansee · 20/02/2019 13:26

At first glance, which is all i took... It appears to be yet another advert using womens bodies/sexuality to sell their product.

There is no indication that she is a singer.

I won't go out of my way to complain.
If i bump into the proprietors i will mention the ad.

I do feel it is everyday sexism.

Thanks all.
