The Vagina* Monologues (*people of all genders have vaginas and these monologues represent a small segment of that population.)

Apparently the Vagina Monologues is too problematic for words, so they are performing it at Princeton with a dozen disclaimers:

www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2019/02/the-vagina-monologues-a-feminist-production-with-a-necessary-asterisk

At the University’s Theater Intime, audience members were discouraged from accepting the performance at face value. Beginning with an originally written and performed prologue, the directors did not refrain from criticizing aspects of the show, namely its equation of vaginas with female identity. The directors acknowledged the production’s inherently trans-exclusionary bent.

The directors denounced its limitations and hoped that the audience would recognize its flaws. They described “The Vagina Monologues” as a “relic” from the nineties (clearly marked throughout the production by denim and scrunchies) and stated that aspects of it were markedly outdated.

"These monologues are not representative of the experiences of all women, or all individuals with vaginas,” the directors affirmed.

The directors gave the show a modified title: “The Vagina Monologues.” The event description came with the caveat that “people of all genders have vaginas and these monologues represent a small segment of that population.”

To highlight the show’s contemporary relevance, the performance was interspersed with recent statistics from ... the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey.

People of many 'genders' may have a vagina, but people of one sex - making up somewhat over 50% of the adult population - has one.

I've not seen the VM but sure, you're never going to get any theatre show which represents all people with some specific characteristics. ConfusedHmm

Knicknackpaddyflak · 19/02/2019 12:20

Please may we talk about the experiences of 52% of the population if we make it very clear we know they're not nearly as important as of course you are, we've mentioned you a lot and pandered all around you and apologised for bloody women daring to exist and acting as if they're not wholly owned and appearing only by your very kind, very generous permission? Please? We're so so sorry to ask, but do you think you might allow it just this once?

Fuck the fuck off.

Trousering · 19/02/2019 12:21

The sequel is called The Autogynaephile Monologues.

I saw VM in the 90's. I thought it was pretty awful at the time tbh, in a lib fem, sex work is empowering kind of way

the students are welcome to it

DoctoressPlague · 19/02/2019 12:42

Why have they kept the noninclusive word "Vagina"? What about front holes, neovaginas and ladycocks? Not very inclusive, is it.

vesuvia · 19/02/2019 12:51

Quotation from linked article in the OP: "The directors gave the show a modified title: “The Vagina Monologues.” The event description came with the caveat that “people of all genders have vaginas and these monologues represent a small segment of that population.”"

What next?

King Lear* by William Shakespeare

*kings can have children of all genders and this play represents only a small segment of the royal population.

Hmm

...aaaah, Shakey:

You must remember that his girls dressed up as boys are in fact boys dressed up as girls.

(....always should be someone you really love, etc.)

ScipioAfricanus · 19/02/2019 13:12

I never realised how many trans gender people there were in Shakespeare! More evidence that this has been around in a big way for a long, long time and is in now way a trend or recent development.

Bearsinmotion · 19/02/2019 13:16

Surely the title is inclusive already as it doesn’t specify the gender of those who have the vaginas in question?! Bit like CRUK’s cervix havers

Melroses · 19/02/2019 13:17
There is always Jess's (former SU trans officer, now defunded, former invited provider of evidence to the Maria Miller report, and formerly of ATH although I confess I am not sure what happened there but there were some allegations ) Impossible Vagina, last seen photographed under the desk (what happened to that inquiry...…….?)
Oldermum156 · 19/02/2019 13:30

Of course actors in Shakespeare's time were all ale because women were not allowed to be actors. The way things are going this will be coming around again we will all be replaced by the superior transwomen and banished to the only things we are good at, breeding and cleaning the house.

They described “The Vagina Monologues” as a “relic” from the nineties, clearly marked throughout the production by denim and scrunchies

And not forgetting all those boring, bog standard retro vaginas. God, so last century.
Actually, hang on, just better check my 70s vagina isn't wearing double denim and watching Chips or The Rockford Files again Grin

Heratnumber7 · 19/02/2019 17:11

I saw a production of VM many years ago. My group walked out in the interval and didn't return. It was awful.

AutisticPartners · 19/02/2019 18:09

Surely the title is inclusive already as it doesn’t specify the gender of those who have the vaginas in question?!

Quite!

This is where they start to reveal themselves. They know that only women have vaginas. So they read 'vaginas' and hear 'women'. It wouldn't be necessary to say anything otherwise.

TheTurtleDidItAndRanAway · 19/02/2019 18:37

I ask all of you to watch this through to the end. For your own benefit.

MillytantForceit · 19/02/2019 19:05

Channel 4 tonight:

www.channel4.com/programmes/100-vaginas

"Documentary artist Laura Dodsworth photographs women and hears their intimate, shocking, moving, powerful or funny stories about how their vaginas have shaped their lives." (...and presumably the reverse)

Lemoncakestrudel · 20/02/2019 02:55

I used mine to have sex and give birth. Should I have done more?

donajimena · 20/02/2019 07:32

Thank you!
We all need that in our lives 🤣🤣🤣🤣

PenguinRoar · 20/02/2019 08:11

Shit play or not, it would be a breach of copyright and performance rights to do this to a play.

T&cs for performance rights for this playhere: www.dramatists.com/termsandconditions/autonpa.htm

Eve Ensler and her agents/management have every right to sue. You just can’t change a play like this.

Smotheroffive · 20/02/2019 14:57

I have seen both VM and 100 vaginas.

Neither relate to small - since when did small relate to over 50% and yes, even the word vagina is too large a threat.

Women, know the power of your vagina!!!

Smotheroffive · 20/02/2019 14:59

It all feels very empowering that vaginas suddenly hold such high office (with penis bearers)
