GRA and Labour Party

Help! I am meeting Labour next week to talk about the GRA. I have some excellent stuff but I wondered if people might be able to add anything specific to the Labour Party.

I have L Madigan. The AWS party being sued. I also have the Fawcett Society and the idea that women's equality would be advanced by a Parliament of 50% men and 50% transwomen.

If anyone has anything else I can add to my meeting I would be very grateful. I have already had a huge amount of help but a bit more would be very handy,

They're banking on historic labour voters continuing to vote regardless, simply because we don't like the alternatives

Beamur · 16/02/2019 15:33

Risky tactic....
I have always voted labour but am increasingly thinking I wouldn't be able to vote in the next election.

Surely no one can be that stupid?

When it comes to voting never forget that The Suffragettes & Suffragists won for you the right to spoil your ballot paper.

I shall spoil mine with a small sticker that says:

Women
noun
adult human female

In October after the Government's consultation on GRA reform closed on a thread condemning Stephen Whittle's use of predicted suicide, he joined and commented confidently:

"In the end we will pull ourselves together and continue the campaigning – as we have always done. We know we have Labour behind this one, so will simply do our best to get them elected. As I tell the community “we have always lost more battles than we have won, but we only ever need to win the big one”.

I hope that clarifies matters.

October 2018 at Pink News party, Jeremy Corbyn apparently confirmed Whittle's belief:
'PinkNews Awards 2018: Jeremy Corbyn vows support for transgender reforms'
by Nick Duffy
(extract)
"Speaking about transgender rights, he said: “We must speak up for the trans community, who today face shocking attacks in the media—just as lesbian and gay people did in the 1980s—as well as now online, which can be a wonderful place but also a horrendous place where attacks take place.

“Labour supports reform of the Gender Recognition Act and Equality Act to allow for self-declaration. The deadline for Government’s consultation is on Friday.

“Trans people must be able to live full, healthy, and happy lives—being the person they want to be. Labour will stand up for their right to do so.”

At a similar time, the Labour Party promoted Stonewall's guidance for the GRA:

apologies, SW full quote above includes the comment, "I hope that clarifies matters"

I wouldn't try to go through a whole list of things - what about this, and this, and this, and this, and this? It actually becomes easier to sidestep difficult questions when there are lots of them

And it depends who you are actually meeting - asking your local councillor whether JC actually met women's groups as promised is somewhat unfair, as why should they know? If you're meeting his special advisor, then absolutely press it home

Your best bet (ie likely to lead to a productive conversation where they understand your concerns sufficiently to be able to feed them back in the party machine) is to start with the basics on sex segregation and sex-based protections. If they don't agree that we allow separate services, facilities and competitions for men and women for reasons of safety, privacy, dignity and fairness, then you are on a hiding to nothing. If they do agree, then the next step is ask them in what way TWAW (without using a circular definition). And take small steps forwards from there.

Don't expect them to comment on individuals (both because it's not really on, unless you are meeting very very senior party officials, but also because of the current legal case that JJ is bringing)

Its important to keep as separate as possible the Safeguarding of children, women's rights, fair process etc.

The lobbying has being cross-party and whilst the Conservatives may seek to gain political capital as they are not completely signed up to self-id Maria Miller played a key role in silencing women's concerns and not properly scrutinising translobbyists.
