My goodness Speak up for Women here in NZ have been working hard ever since the Self ID provision was introduced last year, and I do hope that this public meeting is well attended, and not ambushed by TRAs. I am sure they will try though.

I also hope that (a) the media actually cover this event, and (b) that they do so in an entirely impartial manner, though I am not holding my breath since coverage of transgender issues in NZ from what I have seen has been entirely uncritical.

Apart that is from the Peter Williams interview with Ani O-Brien earlier this year.

This is really important: so many other countries have just fallen for the TRA line that the fabulous GC women and feminists of the UK are a shining beacon to women in places like Canada and NZ. I was in New Zealand last year and I met lots of nice white middle class progressive mums and dads who all think trans is super-cool and that they are being progressive in supporting the mutilation of teenagers.

This is great, although NZ reminds me of Canada on this issue so I’m concerned about the climate there. I’m kiwi myself

I've just realised that Haddock is in New Zealand at the moment. Is this purely a coincidence?

littlbrowndog · 11/02/2019 11:09

Perhaps the haddock has had a change of mind and is a speaker 😂😂😂

BlodwynBludd · 11/02/2019 14:13

I have seen both speak and they are fantastic. If you get the opportunity you should go.

I can't go, but it would be great if the meeting could be live streamed for those who can't manage to get to Auckland. I imagine that in any case it will be filmed, and put up on the SUFW facebook page.

All we have wanted from the Government is a straight answer to these questions: Will this self-identification provision for gender identity override sex-based protections for women and girls? Will the seeming conflation of biological sex and gender identity render meaningless the current protections in the Human Rights Act 1993 against sex-based discrimination and provisions for sex-segregated facilities and services?

And if the answer to those questions is yes and yes, then it is up to to
the government, not us, to give good reasons as to why why sexual predators will not be able to take advantage of Self ID to say that they have a legal right to enter, and remain, in formerly sex-segregated spaces.

It's a disgrace that to date no government MP has seen fit to reassure the public that their legitimate concerns have been heard, and will be taken into account. Instead all the energy has gone into imputing the worst motives to all who have raised their voices on this issue.

It saddens me to say this, but I do not trust our government on this issue.

I went to the Speak Up for Women website to check something before writing on this thread and saw a Press Release from them which has made me incandescent with anger. I put it below.

"Auckland, 11 February 2019 - Today, campaign group Speak Up for Women has received notification from Phantom Billstickers that their poster campaign calling for public consultation on the controversial Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Bill will be removed from over 60 sites from Auckland to Invercargill, in a move that is being described as reactionary and anti-free speech.

The media company allegedly received ‘four or five’ complaints from members of the public over the weekend, in response to the posters.

Speak Up For Women’s posters simply state ‘Fairness. Consultation. Women’s rights to safety, dignity and privacy’ and there has been confusion around what exactly is transphobic about them."

These posters are being put up from Auckland to Invercargill.
The company has capitulated to a few fear mongers instead of asking, 'Well how exactly is this poster trans-phobic" and making people who complained clarify what they meant.
I thought New Zealander's had more guts than this. I am so angry my hands are actually shaking as I type this.
So free speech is for all NZers except if you are women concerned for women and speaking out about legislation which could have serious consequences for women. This is bloody outrageous.
