Telegraph article today by Henry Bodkin:
'Trans GP training course ditched by Royal College'
(extract)
"A trans training course for doctors has been scrapped by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) after members complained it placed “unrealistic expectations” on them.

GPs said the online package, which was written by a transgender activist charity, pressured them towards recommending gender reassignment.

Provided by the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES), the course had been hosted on the RCGP website since 2015.

However, the Royal College has now removed it after it unilaterally amended parts of the wording, prompting a row with the charity.

The RCGP said its members had complained that the guidelines detailing how to treat patients interested in gender reassignment were “not sufficient clear” and “risked creating unrealistic expectations for patients regarding the role of the GP in initiating treatment”. (continues)

It's a bit unclear...

Did they remove the training because GPs complained, or because they had a 'row with the charity' after changing the wording?

youllhavehadyourtea · 09/02/2019 14:16

... or has the row with the charity happened since they removed the training?

can't access the full article - can someone explain?

concludes:
"In 2017, NHS England published a consultation on gender identity services, asking for views on GPs’ involvement in prescribing hormone therapy.

This followed a row between the GP Committee and GMC over GPs’ concerns that they were being forced to prescribe to gender dysphoria patients without the necessary expertise.

The GPC responded by advising GPs to ignore GMC guidance on the matter.

“Feedback from College members was that this was not sufficiently clear in our e-learning module on Gender Variance, and that this risked creating unrealistic expectations for patients regarding the role of the GP in initiating treatment,” Dr Leach added.

“This is why we decided to review and change the course, and ultimately withdraw the course when our partners did not accept these changes.”

He said the Royal College is currently developing a new course for GPs, which will be launched later this year."

GPs said the online package, which was written by a transgender activist charity, pressured them towards recommending gender reassignment.

Surely it should be the other way round. Doctors should be writing about the process.

If it's GIRES, he is an MBA and she is a chiropractor. Not a medical qualification between them.

Datun · 09/02/2019 14:37

Oh sorry maybe you need a medical qualification to be a chiropractor.

No offence.

rocketromano · 09/02/2019 15:37

Chiropractors are definitely not doctors datun don’t worry
I suspect GPs have fed back to rcgp about their concerns about being asked to prescribe or even initiate cross sex hormones before someone even sees a specialist or as an ongoing treatment after assessment. This is partly because this is very new in medical terms and long term effects are not known but likely to include higher rates of cancer, liver disease, heart disease etc. Any GP prescribing ‘outwith their competance’ is risking their career. And doing an online module does not qualify GPs to prescribe experimental hormone treatments off licence. I wonder if that’s the course that Dr Webberly did...

Nope. And there’s pretty much no evidence base for it either.

The fa t that pressure groups with zero medical qualifications are writing guidelines is shocking. It really needs to be talked about. We aren’t talking about say, insulin pump using patients being consulted on how to redesign a device for better user acceptance- we are talking setting the actual medical guidelines. It’d be like giving our insulin pump users free access to the pharmacy and telling them to mix up what they fancied.

It’s not something that has happened in ANY other medical field. It’s very worrying.

Come to think of it she could be a chiropodist.

I know it began with a C...

Course, I decided it was all snake oil when they claimed transitioning cures autism.

Datun · 09/02/2019 20:01

...and then wrote guidelines for doctors.
