The statues are 'women' in appearance only. If these are women, then a male human making themselves into a similar artistic outer representation is also a 'woman' in that exact sense.

I know my local group - faced with a dearth of statues representing actual women - decided not to use female allegorical statues. They managed to find a good statue of a real woman, though they had a long trek from where they lived to dress her.
