At least their not claiming to be women.

I don't see that we are so different in the UK. Who was it who said they'd be happy with a parliament of 50% men and 50% transwomen? The Jo Cox programme has a disproportionate number of TW. I expect there are others.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/01/2019 16:51

The UAE thing is just beyond mockery, it's so painful and ridiculous.

Of course the UK isn't so bad, yet. But best never to make assumptions about the direction of travel.

AncientLights · 28/01/2019 16:54

Well no, not quite as bad but I would no longer mock such countries myself.

ProfessoressWoland · 28/01/2019 16:59

It was Sal Brinton of the LibDems, Ancient.
Of course UK isn't as bad as the UAE, but in Sal's happy scenario it absolutely would be as bad - or actually worse because we'd be required to pretend that we had equality.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2019 17:09

While on the face of it, this seems ridiculous, they're at an early stage of promoting and it's almost inevitable that the leadership of the various organisation getting awards will still be men. Mocking people who are starting to implement change is quite mean spirited and IMO misplaced.

If the lineup is still all male in 5, 10, or however many years time ...

But looking at the percentage of women MPs and board members in the U.K. , 100 years after women started to get the vote maybe we'd still not be in much of a position to point and laugh.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/01/2019 17:15

I'm almost as depressed about the state of the UK as I am about states like the UAE. When I was a teenager in the 90s I genuinely thought there was about to be rapid change. Now as an older woman and a mother I realise just how naive that was.

JSmitty · 28/01/2019 18:08

Complete equality in the UAE when it comes to beatings in custody and electric cattle prods applied where it hurts.

This. These men are attempting something that no other neighbouring country can be bothered to even address. And it's something valued highly enough to have awards handed out by the ruler. If these men achieve something for women, do you suggest those women reject the help because of an all-or-nothing mentality?

" If these men achieve something for women, do you suggest those women reject the help because of an all-or-nothing mentality?"

No, of course not. Doesn't prevent me from feeling weary and depressed about the fact that we're still at that level, change is slow almost to the point of being meaningless, all the time vulnerable to the whims of men who might decide to put women back in their box if the fancy takes them.

I wouldn’t endorse the mockery.

I posted the link because it’s such a gobsmacking example of men controlling women’s lives.

It's a depressing picture, for all the reasons you outline, OP. But I agree with others who've said that it's pretty inevitable, given the fucked-up society we're talking about here, that these awards would go to men in the first instance.

Their PR team should certainly have thought about the impact of those photos, and I'd also be responding differently if they still looked like that in five or ten years time. Overall, though, I think it's better that they're doing this than not.

Absolutely

No, I didn't think you, or anyone else posting here was doing that.

Definitely.
