There is a protest outside the Supreme Court 9.30am supporting a woman who has been sued for defamation by her ex after saying on Facebook that he 'tried to strangle her'. The judge said that because he didn't intend to kill her, just silence her, it was libel as most people would believe 'tried to strangle' means attempted to kill.

So want to be there but can't due to uni. It's sickening how money is being used against abused women

Sorry run that by me again - he put his hands hands around her throat to silence her? And that’s not a serious assault? Oh so the nitpick is the intent of the assault? So it’s ok as long as he didn’t want to kill her?

It's a shocking case. Apparently strangling is not strangling as long as you say that you didn't intent to kill.

"Karen Ingala Smith, CEO ofniaand co-founder of theFemicide Censussaid

"We know from the Femicide Census that between 2009 and 2017, 285 women were killed though strangulation, of which 188 women were strangled to death by a current or former partner, that’s an average of one woman strangled to death every two weeks. It is the second most common method used to kill women in the UK.

Accidentally causing death by applying pressure to the vagus nerve in the neck has also been used successfully as a defence against a murder charge[1]. Whether used as a means to kill, frighten and/or control women strangulation is extremely dangerous and abusive. Anything that undermines the seriousness of strangulation, especially when sanctioned in law, is a green-light for men who abuse women. "

There is an article in the Telegraph as well. She was fighting cancer while dealing with this court case and then is liable for over £200,000. It’s horrendous.
