Fighting for women's toilets in India

An inspiring story in the Guardian today on the struggles women face in rural India for basic sanitation. The government initiated the programme for safe and clean toilets, but it seems to be left to the women to do the hard yards.

Extract from article.

"Now, I can say with pride that no one in the villages defecates in the open. The whole atmosphere has been changed by [Hadala’s] efforts and everyone is keeping every bit of the village clean,” says Ram.

The village school, for example, has a row of neat and clean separate toilets for boys and girls – a far cry from many village schools where there is often no toilet at all – a running water supply and several places for handwashing. The girls get free sanitary pads.

“It took a young girl to get us to raise our standards. But now everyone is involved and we plan to keep it up,” says Ram."

Yet another example of the need for single sex spaces to preserve women’s safety and dignity.

And another example of women doing the actual physical work to make it happen.

That's a sobering read. Thanks for the link.

Bumping up. This is important.

A step in the right direction for a country where 600,000,000 people still shit in the open.

Another inspiring story about women and the fight for safe toilet provision. Good to know that the new leader of Pakistan Imran Khan has this issue on his radar.

Of course all people deserve to have access to clean and safe toilets, but women and girls are especially vulnerable without out it, and not just because of the possibility of sexual attacks, but for other reasons too, as acknowledged on the website below.

EDUCATION/GIRLS

Clean and safe toilets help keep more girls in school and increase attendance rates. Far too many girls miss out on education just because of the lack of a clean and safe toilet.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the men claiming womanhood could forgot themselves for just a moment, and think of the actual problems faced by real women around the world? Yeah right.
