Egard Watches Respond to Gillette Advert

So it’s the story that never ends. The Gillette Ad. A watch company that I had never heard of have responded to the Gillette advert with their own ‘what is a man’ advert. It seems to have gone viral too with over 2 million views and mentions in the press. Be keen to hear people’s thoughts. I think it will go down well and boost their sales. m.youtube.com/watch?v=x_HL0wiK4Zc

People always say this but I don't understand how it's relevant to the victim.

In order to tackle an issue, you have to know the cause. You have to identify it. The point of the Gillette ad was to confront men’s behaviours and enabling of violence conducted by other men around them. It, as far as I can recall, was focused on the behaviour of the perpetrators. Not the identity of the victims. I would of thought that was a positive thing, to address the problem. To respond with an ad that focussed on men as victims, is to diminish responsibility. The maker of the ad said as much. He wants to focus on good things men do, since speaking about the bad stuff makes him feel bad ☹️

But we really should stop calling out bad behaviour because it’s just boring/depressing now? Is that the message from this?

That is pretty much what the maker of the ad actually said ( I linked his egotistical statement earlier )

Not downplaying the issue (my previous post want intended as blunt as it sounded).

Are you fucking kidding? Men have it worse because they have to listen to an ‘assault on their character’. Only a few women get murdered? What about those assaulted abused harassed and raped? Oops no, that’s nothing compared to having to hear about how bad the rapists are.

Ffs would the MRA’s just leave us alone

picklemepopcorn · 23/01/2019 21:39

Lots of the issues raised in that ad are within the man's control or influence.

Well, a very small % of women get murdered

And one in five women are the victims of a sexual offence. And pretty much all of them have been on the receiving end of the sort of behaviour referenced in the Gillette ad.

But yeah, assault on character is way worse.

MargueritaPink · 23/01/2019 22:28

Well this man isn't afraid to recognise the problem.

Mide7 · 23/01/2019 22:40

I don’t see the problem if I’m honest. In fact it feels to me just like a continuation of the Gillette ad. A lot of the issues in this ad are related to the theme of the Gillette.

The striking difference is the Gillette advert recognised most violence is caused by men. The answer to solving most violence is for men to stop being violent.

In the other advert it emphasised that more men than women are victims of violence. I don't doubt that's true but it ignores the fact the vast majority of the perpetrators of violence against men are men.

Marguerita thanks for that link. Pretty powerful stuff, it made me feel a bit teary at the end to hear a man say all that.

Mide with respect I think you need to rewatch them the difference is quite clear.
