Because women have traditionally been excluded from / under-represented in engineering, right? Probably due to gendered stereotyping and pressure.
Right?
So good for the University of Northumbria for encouraging women to step forward in a largely male oriented field.
Right?

Oh, wait. See the first line of the T&C....
Emily Wilding Davis scholarship

Emily Davison would be turning in her grave, right?

It is possible to fill in the form and submit it.
There is an opportunity to make a short statement.

I hate this so much! Women's scholarships open to literally anyone... absolute piss-take.

Badgerthebodger · 20/01/2019 13:06

Hawayman I love both your temporary username and your email Grin

I am happy to write in as well, think it’s always worth making the point with these things. It’s absolute bullshit

I identify as being able to code and do the kind of maths necessary to be an engineer.

Vixxxy · 20/01/2019 13:16

I genuinely don't get why places do this. If its for anyone, just say that. Daft saying its for women only, then saying its actually mixed sex, makes no sense!

NicolaStart · 20/01/2019 14:42

YetAnotherSpartacus Apply! Surely you are eligible!

I certainly agree that it's entirely wrong subvert a scholarship meant for a specific underrepresented group (women in engineering) by including another group. If there's any stats suggesting TW are underrepresented in the eligible fields, then they should lobby for their own scholarships - but as courses such as computer gaming seem to be on the list I somehow doubt that's the case).

However, in reality, the vast majority of male students wouldn't think to apply, they would simply assume that this scholarship really is supposed to be for women.

MIdgebabe · 20/01/2019 18:48

Is it actually legal to offer places to people identifying as women? I thought you could only do positive discrimination to groups as listed in the equality act? If so they are breaking the law. The can offer to women ( which unless they have a good reason includes transwomen with grc and would not need to be stated
( I know the disclosure problem exists if the transwomen with grc is clearly not female, and they can’t actually verify that the person has a grc) but denying the scholarship to some men and not others is clear discrim8natiom that is not supported under the equality act

2010Equality · 20/01/2019 23:42

They can indirectly verify a GRC by asking for a birth certificate. The scholarship could simply be for women (legal women). So many orgs have tied themselves in knots thinking its controversial, or difficult (or mean or perhaps old fashioned) to do something for women.
