I read this and was outraged. To be fair to Nepal the practice is outlawed but this is a supreme example of how women are discriminated against because of their biology.

Yes, I read that too, not sure why the older children were in the hut with her. The women have died of snake bites and of course are vulnerable to rape and assault.

Having said that about rape, given how menstruation is viewed I am not sure if a woman would be raped in these circumstances. It is a horrid thing for a young girl to contemplate when she starts her first period.

There have been reports from rural India about menstruating girls and women being raped in the menstrual huts. Seems drunken men 'forget' the prohibition against sex with menstruatiing women.

Also interesting that the recent Guardian piece talks of the women practising it and the women not letting go of old beliefs, if I remember correctly. No coercion from men then?
