Turned fucking Luther off

Horrendous first episode. The scene on the bus was horrendous and all too plausible. Sick and tired of the women as victims drama drama trope. Like it doesn't happen EVERY fucking day. Absolutely SICK OF IT.

It seems to me like a sort of cultural terrorism. A constant reminder that all the space belongs to men and that they can impose whatever they like on us so we should shut up and be grateful it isn't usually that bad

stillathing · 05/01/2019 23:20

that is a really great way of putting it tallulah

i just don't find it fun any more

similarly i used to love Black Mirror before i felt like we were stuck in a perpetual episode of it

Whisky2014 · 05/01/2019 23:22

Interesting. My parents and my aunt and uncle switched it off too. I've never seen it

Grace212 · 05/01/2019 23:22

yes, there's a lot of stuff I don't watch because of this. I don't care how good it is - I am so sick of violence against women being used as entertainment and there is a definite bias that means "woman as victim" is much more common.

AnyFucker · 05/01/2019 23:23

Yup

I am completely sick of attractive young women getting raped, killed and laid out naked on slabs in the name of "entertainment"

I am done

AdultHumanFemale · 05/01/2019 23:28

DP and I were just saying earlier how we wouldn't catch up with Luther as it just became too grim.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 05/01/2019 23:30

You should have stuck with it. Women were not the only victims. It was a good series.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 05/01/2019 23:31

And men were not the only perpetrators either.

DustyMaiden · 05/01/2019 23:32

To keep the balance there were a couple of female psychopaths.

Pangur2 · 05/01/2019 23:37

I don't understand, the first few victims were men in this series.

fivepies · 05/01/2019 23:44

I convinced my DH to watch it - based on me having watched an earlier series. Regretted it though. I felt so angry and agreed with many PPs. I asked my DH how often he had to watch his deepest fears being played out in detail on TV (in the name of 'entertainment')? He said he hasn't but totally agreed when I explained how these story lines feel from a female perspective.
Needless to say, I won't be watching the rest of the series.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 05/01/2019 23:57

I think it’s a shame for those of you who turned off after the first episode. It really wasn’t how you think.

fem2019 · 06/01/2019 01:04

As I commented on another thread, it is not about balance. There is no balance. The writers of Luther were obviously male. Because if they were female they would never have used the scene with some black clad antagonist crawling up the aisle to kill her. Because that is something that could happen to women. It was violence porn.

Neurotrash · 06/01/2019 07:51

I can't stand that actor so don't watch it but it sounds like there should be a stand against this type of entertainment.

floribunda18 · 06/01/2019 07:56

The first one I ever watched someone hid under a woman's bed and murdered her. I thought "Oh, FFS!" and resolved not to watch again. I thought I 'd give it a go again the other night, and a young woman was stabbed to death on a bus. Not for me.

Snapsnapsnap · 06/01/2019 07:56

Doesn't matter what else happens, I can't un-see the bit where a woman (me) is terrified and preyed on. It makes me angry and scared in real life and no amount of plot can make that worth watching.

Snapsnapsnap · 06/01/2019 07:57

An I agree with the OP, this is violence against women being used for thrills and the writers should be ashamed.

floribunda18 · 06/01/2019 08:01

I don't like it as it seems gratutiously violent and scary. But is it really only preying on women's fears only for entertainment? Two men were killed as well in the episode I saw.

I am really fucking sick of programmes only dealing with attractive young women being murdered but is this one of them?

feministfairy · 06/01/2019 08:11

I'm weary of stabbings, shootings, torture and rape being used as entertainment porn. There is an unremitting torrent of murders happening in real life (murders of women, stabbings of predominantly young men) and I have to question whether the relentless coverage of this as 'entertainment' in some way contributes to normalising what is happening.

ReflectentMonatomism · 06/01/2019 08:14

I don’t start watching anything unless I am 95% certain it will not feature sexualised violence against young women so the writer or director can get their jollies, or give the audience what low expectations say they want.

I therefore watch no drama after 9pm. I watch no police procedural.

candlefloozy · 06/01/2019 08:22

Wow. This thread is something else

Overtiredandoverit · 06/01/2019 08:36

DH and I started watching Series 1 last night, having seen posts all over our timelines about how excited people were that it was back. We watched 3 episodes and then agreed that we wouldn't watch anymore. In DHs words "it's everything that's wrong with everything". Nasty, bullying, narcissistic male protagonist. Were women meant to be placated by the "strong women": female boss (ignored) ex-wife, (terrorised and bullied), villian (yes, always an evil woman to blame for a man acting outside of the rules)? Just enforcing stereotypes and societal expectations of behaviour. And don't get me started on the breathy Phil Mitchell-esque estuary accents, FFS, clear your throats everyone and speak properly!

I rarely watch TV anymore. This reminded my why.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 06/01/2019 08:41

The scene on the bus was upsetting - perhaps because it’s plausible? Stabbings are not uncommon in London.

I haven’t watched Criminal Minds in years since I watched an episode about girls kidnapped and tortured and found out it was based on a real case.

There was also an episode in Endeavour where a young woman is raped at a party. That was really upsetting and stayed with me for days. Sad

cortex10 · 06/01/2019 08:44

Also switched off - too grim

MustDust · 06/01/2019 08:54

I don't watch any of these type of programmes and I think subconsciously this is why, the fact it's all too real. I was saying to DH the other day it's sick they're making a drama out of the Levi Bellfield murders, tv entertainment about someone's murder. It's very wrong.
