Haven't actually got a problem with this. It seems to be a charity that provides a gym for people affected by mental health.

As a third space, I think it's a good idea and wish them luck.

Hope the link works.

This line though,

" I truly believe that exercise can be a powerful means of developing a more positive relationship with our bodies, which can be such a challenge for non-cis people."

Well, I agree. In fact a more positive self image is great for all people.

But should she be calling people non-cis?
Surely that's a bit counter productive? 😕

Good grief, Rowantrees. I guess that's what happens when you are your own sole hobby and interest.

Getting nice and sweaty in the gym would genuinely be good for some people - take their minds off themselves for a bit.

My husband goes to yoga (even has a monthly membership) and would even go at 9:30 on a Monday as he works irregular hours. He goes to all sorts of types of yoga. But if I asked him how he “identified” he would look at me like I had suddenly grown a third ear on my forehead.

On another note the coloured wedding dresses as being worthy of an essay cracks me up, though the sentiment itself is not a new thing; just a new version of an ongoing trend for brides to need to set themselves out as different: a decade or so ago when I married it seemed that there were people who thought choosing ivory or any other type of off-white and doing a wedding in anything other than a church was worthy of an essay (even if if meant now everyone wore off-white and married in a barn instead).

I am a big supporter of tailored schemes to get more people active - my gym does stuff aimed at over 50s, over 70s, women only (attended mostly by women-new-to-exercise and Muslim women) stuff for the under 5’s and the under 8’s, family gym time for children over 11 accompanied by a parent, stuff at external venues to entice people in who are scared of the concept of attending the actual gym itself.

This is the kind of thing that the exemptions in the equality act allow for and while they aren’t as important as things like DV refuges, they do make an enormously positive impact on lots of people, both in terms of physical and mental wellness, and in social and community terms.

I’m not sure that a trans specific provision would have the numbers it required to sustain long term, but I would be pleased if my gym decided to give it a go.
