I have contacted 3 MPs so far

Firstly my own MP. By email, twice getting the same standard (Labour) response each time. Then in person when he was firmly on the anti Self ID side.

Secondly two Conservative MPs I am acquainted with. One Cabinet minister who gave a non committal but pleasant response. Another who used to be in the cabinet who gave a positive response saying they would not vote for anything which removed women only spaces.

There are more MPs than you might think who share our view!

I’ve contacted two MPs, both Tory. One sent me a long letter about the poor trans people who needed protecting by the new legislation and the other one sent me back a cheeky email.

ChewyLouie · 01/01/2019 10:41

Thanks Gently you’ve spurred me on to do the same in 2019 too 👍🏻

userschmoozer · 01/01/2019 10:53

I don't trust the non committal replies, I think their voting record will be what counts in the end.

ChewyLouie · 01/01/2019 11:16

They have been lobbied for decades and during this process have become trained to elevate trans needs above all others.
We are women and our voices need to be heard, ignore us but we will not be silenced.
I’m in this for the long haul, their current lack of commitment to women’s basic human rights will change.

Gentlygently · 01/01/2019 18:21

I hear what you say about non committal replies, but given they have chosen to use that over the party line which is pro self ID that is better than nothing!

Well done GG - I was expecting the other two to ask if you were a constituent and then use that as a way of weaselling out of taking a position so that's actually quite a positive response

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 01/01/2019 19:36

Well done for writing.

a positive response saying they would not vote for anything which removed women only spaces.

Just have to hope their stance/starting point isn’t TWAW.

Melanippe · 01/01/2019 20:07

My Tory MP would do whatever TM said, even if she told him to jump off Beachy Head. He's so desperate for a cabinet position, but far too stupid and reactionary to get one. No joy there.

TimeLady · 02/01/2019 07:21

Mine's the same, Melanippe. Lovely man but will toe the party line.

Gentlygently · 02/01/2019 07:25

Even if they will toe the party line eventually, the strength of feeling among their constituents, as measured by people contacting them, can help mould what the party line is. All parties want to know how poptany measure is going to be (or otherwise).

I've had no response from my mp.

Not a peep

Purplewithgreenspots · 02/01/2019 16:26

How do you find out who is standing against your MP? I have just re-read my MPs letter, realised it says that he is looking forwards to voting in self-id.

StuffingSandwich · 03/01/2019 10:35

The concern for me, and I know it's the one I keep reading in other people's responses to vaguely optimistic MP etc responses is this:

What happens when self ID leads to the issuing of GRCs that mean the recipient is now legally the 'gender' they identify as? Because all those people will be biologically and physically male but will be as legally female as I am.

It is possible to maintain the stance of protecting Women Only Spaces and allow TW in if you also believe that TWAW.

The "don't worry, we will protect Women Only Spaces" argument simply means that they won't let common or garden boring men who still think they are men in.

They just don't join the two points up.

But it's pretty much what my MP's response was.

IAmAHomewardBounder · 18/01/2019 23:30

I met my MP at his surgery tonight. He is gender critical and shares concerns but he's unwilling to do or say anything at the moment (because he's a man and he's not that popular) He reckons we're only in the foothills of the debate. I'm a party member though and have started going to the women's meetings and the all member ones. I guess we'll be climbing that debate mountain by hook or by crook.
