Has he deleted his tweet about Mermaids? No longer seems to be on his timeline - is it just me?

OP posts:
AreYouANoddingDog · 28/12/2018 09:17

It does seem unfair and not wise really to judge others when most posters aren’t out themselves and want to keep allies onside. Felt the same about the jk Rowling threads

Speak for yourself, I have been out in public for years.

Guacatrole · 28/12/2018 09:20

I said most posters. Most have said they don’t discuss it at work and from what I can see of Twitter, don’t use their real names. Not sure how you’re struggling with that

CarolinePooter · 28/12/2018 09:30

As an aside, I made a supportive post, and it did stay at the top of the tweets for a few days. I am not used to twitter, so I don't know in what order tweets show up? Anyway, I did get some likes so not everyone hates Robert. He was only showing support for Janice, after all.

ChewyLouie · 28/12/2018 09:31

Disappointed but clearly demonstrates the silencing techniques used by the trans cult.
If there has been any hate crime I wonder how West Yorkshire Police would log it. Hate crime by saintly, pious, trans folk🤥 I expect a few would need reprogramming after thinking about it.

hackmum · 28/12/2018 09:50

It does make you realise how terrifically brave Julie Bindel is. She's been putting up with this shit for years, often with very little support. Until very recently she was a lone voice crying in the wilderness.

Speaking out is hard.

Beamur · 28/12/2018 10:01

I think these heads above the parapets tweets/comments are nonetheless incredibly valuable. It's another person, who has looked at some of the things going on at the moment and had a WTF? moment...
The comment may go, but the understanding remains. They may decide it's too toxic or dangerous to their career to have a public opinion though.

WSPU · 28/12/2018 10:04

I’m not judging, just curious. He must have known what sort of response his tweet would get and have been somewhat prepared for it as clearly he’s been following the debate. What prompted him to back off?

User10fuckingmillion · 28/12/2018 10:05

I think it’s fair enough. But then I’m to scared to be on Twitter in the first place Blush

CarolinePooter · 28/12/2018 10:23

It would be an excellent tactic to tweet, get the TRAs in a froth, then delete tweet. And repeat. And delete etc.

RedHoodGirl · 28/12/2018 10:34

Maybe he did more research and changed his opinion? Or maybe it’s nothing more ‘sinister’ that he thought, upon reflection, that it wasn’t something that he should have tweeted at Christmas time?

I’ve seen people responding to his tweet - after all he’s got 484k followers, he’s going to get people responding with a variety of opinions, including, I’m sure, GC people from here - but I’ve not witnessed a ‘pile on’, threats, or any of the aggression mentioned above.

FamilyOfAliens · 28/12/2018 10:36

he thought, upon reflection, that it wasn’t something that he should have tweeted at Christmas time?

Wait, you can only be gender critical outside of the holiday season? Why weren’t we told? Grin

Bowlofbabelfish · 28/12/2018 10:38

he thought, upon reflection, that it wasn’t something that he should have tweeted at Christmas time?

What? Why? Is critical thought verboten in the festive season?

FamilyOfAliens · 28/12/2018 10:42

Pretty spooky x-post there, bowl Shock

Guacatrole · 28/12/2018 10:43

He's pretty well researched at this point unlikely to come to a different opinion after a couple of days from the one he had for the past couple years.

More likely he's been visited by the Mermaid's legal fairy. They've threatened to sue and successfully had people investigated for accurately portraying things they admit to doing.

Bowlofbabelfish · 28/12/2018 10:51

Grin family

‘Not at Christmas! You’ll frighten the...umm... elves..?’

FloralBunting · 28/12/2018 11:00

Yes, I'm sure a man who has written a book about the massive harm gender does to everyone had a sudden epiphany that a lobby group that advocates for the mutilation and sterilization of kids so they conform to ideas of gender better was far too wonderful to be criticized.

That's the only explanation.

CarolinePooter · 28/12/2018 11:08

So, getting on for half a million fans will have seen him being bullied off twitter. If they weren't aware of Mermaids before, they will be now.

OrchidInTheSun · 28/12/2018 11:10

I've seen loads of aggression. Given he's got young children, I'm not surprised he's being a bit cautious.

After all, we've all seen how aggressive some TRAs can get www.facebook.com/100002019595833/posts/1980382692039031/ (video of a transwoman kicking off in a game store because someone called them sir or guys or something)

birdsdestiny · 28/12/2018 11:12

Are you joking? his tweeter feed was horrendous afterwards.

Mariotta · 28/12/2018 11:13

I think he is a person who is terrified of conflict and who spent a year plucking up the courage to say something and then ran away from what he had said, which is what he had feared he would do all along, hence the silence when everyone knew he was GC.

It's difficult not to be impatient with him when, as PPs have said, there are ordinary women taking more crap and risking more than he will ever take or risk, but I do have some sympathy.

Floisme · 28/12/2018 11:14

Mermaids replied to his tweet. As I recall they were disappointed and saddened but very polite and gracious and they invited him to contact them privately for a chat. I think we can all imagine how that chat might have gone.

I have no moral authority to criticise Webb, none whatsoever. But as previous posters have said, my regard for the likes of Julie Bindel and Glinner has climbed even higher.

ShotsFired · 28/12/2018 11:15

Side question, but one of the "you've not only let yourself down.." crowd in the linked article describes themselves as "trans NB"

If you are non-binary first and foremost, what are you trans of/from/to?
Or if you are trans-something first, what binary are you not?

Is it a bit like saying I am a non-house semi detached terrace?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 28/12/2018 11:17

Poor chap.

As McKinnon demonstrated with Martina however, under TRA ideology, it doesn't matter what you've done with your life or how great everything else you've done is, if you do or say one solitary thing TRAs take exception to it erases any good or any value in you totally.

(Which is exactly like 'splitting', a form of distorted thinking where someone is all good or all bad, based on the last thing they did that affected you personally, which is a pathology associated with personality disorders. Funny that.)

And recanting is not enough. Sack cloth and ashes is not enough. Think Mr Murdstone on crack with a cane explaining to you that this is for your own good, and Jane Eyre on a chair with a sign of shame for hours and hours. There is no forgiveness for heresy, nothing will spare you from the fires, you are damned.

So basically recanting is a waste of time and energy anyway.

BettyDuMonde · 28/12/2018 11:18

I see that none of the tweeters defending Mermaids in the Metro story were actual service users? It’s all just ‘if’ speculation - they are projecting a good guys reputation onto Mermaids based on a very brief description (Mermaids support trans kids) and go no further into what they do (lobby for minors to have life-altering medical interventions with no research-proven benefits).

Watched a video by a transman 12 years after phalloplasty last night - sounded horrific: m.youtube.com/watch?v=sqAo_TYlct4
