Sex differences in viral severity

An interesting one - apologies I think it’s probably pay walled but the gist is this. Many viruses hit women less hard than men and it may be because women can pass them down to their infants. A virus will evolve be be less severe usually if the host can pass a lot of it on.

www.newscientist.com/article/2115987-viruses-may-have-evolved-to-hit-men-hard-but-go-easy-on-women/

Two interesting quotes:

For this to be the case, though, the virus would have to be able to detect whether it’s inside a man or a woman. We don’t yet know how it would do this, but it’s not impossible, says Jansen. “There are all sorts of hormonal and other pathways that are slightly different between men and women,” he says.

The study emphasises the need to conduct clinical trials in both sexes, rather than predominantly in men as is often the case, says David Duneau, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Toulouse, France. “The parasites themselves are behaving differently in males and females, so we need to know what they do in both sexes,” he says.

Just a small reminder that Real Scientists doing Real Science are fully aware that sex and sex difference is indeed a thing ;)

And a very Merry Christmas to you all Xmas Wink

The sexes identify each other by smell.

We know this.

Fascinating, Bowl! Something I've wanted to post for a long tone is that the differences between males and females are not just macro (bodies, organs, anatomy), or micro, (DNA, proteins, cells), but everything in between, too! The more we learn about aging and disease, the exceedingly more clear it becomes that women's bodies ARE very different than men's, and research and treatments should reflect this.

Dr. Paula Johnson is a US physician who talks about this very subject and her content is riveting. Here's an interview about her: www.npr.org/2017/02/10/514153036/when-does-medicine-leave-women-behind

This is her actual TED talk:

BIOLOGY MATTERS!

Oh, having cats all my life has definitely changed my behaviour: I long ago accepted my Feline Overlords. (Rotten beasts that they are.)

YeOldeNameChange · 26/12/2018 10:46

A nice dose of reality! All these woke bros are just pretending aren’t they.

It occurs to me that females are more “necessary” than males in terms of procreation (as has been said before fewer males isn’t an issue but the more females the better).

Virtue signalling is everything now. Even big, trusted organisations are doing it. The Police, the BBC. Lying to save feelings. Let that sink in - the Police. Lying. Due to social media, deeds mean nothing anymore and words everything. So you can be a complete narcissist but so long as you’re saying the right things you’re a decent person. Or you can be a decent person but you say something a bit un-PC and suddenly they want blood.

And of course, the lady penis smells nice.

Yeah, sure it does.

WrathofRancidKlopp · 26/12/2018 10:58

If I were a sex worker (which I'm not) Grin
It would be the smell that would repulse me.

BettyDuMonde · 26/12/2018 13:57

Not quite relevant but something I learned recently and do not have enough knowledge on to start a seperate thread:

Boys suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia need a whole year’s worth of extra treatment (girls have two years of chemo, boys 3).

www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk/childhood-cancer-info/cancer-types/acute-lymphoblastic-leukaemia/

Sex differences are real and saying so does not make one a ‘genital obsessive’.

Humans having evolved to respond differently to viruses, that I could get on board with more easily.

I'm not an expert so this is a very random idea but I do remember a lactation consultant commenting that they think breasts evolved from the immune system - which would make sense if it contains antibodies etc. Just wondering if therefore the female immune system is different to the male. Might also explain higher incidents of ME in women (if it's triggered by viruses) and possibly higher autoimmune disease among women etc.

(Again no expert just find it fascinating)

Neurotrash · 26/12/2018 16:57

And so different responses to viruses.

AspieAndProud · 26/12/2018 17:43

I’ve got this niggling feeling that I’ve read something about this and I just can’t remember.

It’s bugging me now. I won’t sleep tonight!

My dp has this hypothesis aspie that if you were a male hunter it was probably safer to stay in your cave rather than go out hunting dangerous prey when you were unwell and not on top of your game, whereas for female gatherers going out digging for roots with a cold doesn't add to the risk to the same extent as facing up to a mammoth when you feel a bit wobbly, does. So, all the brave non-manflu men got eaten by sabre toothed tigers or trampled by rhinos while being sniffly and didn't pass on their genes at the same rate. For this hypothesis to work there needs to be fairly strict division of labour between the sexes though and I don't know what the current thinking among paleontologists is in that respect.

Eeek
The first link in my last post seems to be dodgy.
I've reported it to MNHQ.

ScottCheggJnr · 26/12/2018 20:44

I've just recovered from a nasty case of the flu (which I almost never get - haven't been ill in literally years!). The 'manflu' jibes from my gf and female friends/relatives have been nothing short of irritating.

In the reverse, my gf would likely be acting as if the universe had ground to a halt, and heaven forbid anyone dared crack the slightest attempt at a joke at her expense!
