10 year old talking about gender

I think my daughter has had some lessons about gender at school. She told me yesterday that she is female, but thinks she might not have a gender as that “all sounds like nonsense” to her.

From what she’s explained, I think gender has been explained in the context of stereotypes and as something different to biological sex, it seems that it was: you are stereotype girl, stereotype boy or non binary.

Is this typical? Does anyone know what the curriculum content is (yr 5)?

You seem to have a young radfem there. Congratulations! Flowers

I suppose her teacher is normal and was forced to teach gender but made sure to let children know gender is just a bunch of stereotypes and has nothing to do with sex.

cloudtree · 17/12/2018 19:22

If it hasn't all come from school has she been reading the Magnus Chase series (Percy Jackson spin off)? I was reading over DS2s shoulder yesterday as we were having a cuddle and I was quite surprised to see a gender fluid character in there who was apparently "assigned" a sex at birth.

The essence of TRA ideology - reinforcing old-fashioned gender stereotypes under the guise of progressiveness.

courderoy · 17/12/2018 19:32

Thank you Hestia. She is a child of strong views!

I think you are right about the teacher.

She likes Percy Jackson cloudtree so she might have been reading that at school...

The essence of TRA ideology - reinforcing old-fashioned gender stereotypes under the guise of progressiveness.

Indeed.

But it gives me hope that the teacher seems to have made it clear that it is different from sex, and not implied one can identify out of one's biological sex.

Only thing that needs to be done now is tell daughter that you don't have a "gender identity", either, and that that's normal and there's no need to identify as non-binary (if she didn't dismiss that idea anyway).

courderoy · 17/12/2018 20:29

This was the bit that worried me, it did sound like they were being told you had your biological sex and then another thing.

in the end she said “I think I will just be dd1”.

Being yourself is all you can be. Well done your daughter!

concretesieve · 17/12/2018 21:11

Your DD is lovely Flowers

Yes, I think you're spot on - AIUI this is exactly how it works. DC are taught about bio sex and then about 'gender identity'. I'm sorry I can't make links, but Google for the Genderbread Person and/or Allsorts Toolkit.

What to do about the school, I don't know Sad Maybe ask about the materials they're using?

courderoy · 17/12/2018 22:00

I think the genderbread person may be the epitomy of what I have been trying to renounce my entire life:

Sorry, I am sure you are all already very familiar but I am going to quote it anyway.

‘‘ You wake up and you’re wearing baggy grey sweatpants and a tshirt. As you walk into your kitchen to prepare breakfast, you’re expressing an adrogynous-to-slightly-masculine gender. However, you see your partner in the kitchen and you prowl in like Halle Berry from Catwoman, then you are expressing much more femininely, so now you’re back on the left half of the continuum. You pour a bowl of cereal, wrap your fist around a spoon like a viking, and start shoveling Fruit Loops into your face, and all-of-a-sudden you’re sliding back onto the right side of the continuum. After breakfast, you skip back into your bedroom and playfully place varying outfits in front of you, pleading your partner help you decide what to wear. You’re feminine again.”

I know, I was just the same .... Forgot to mention Transgender Trend. They are gender-critical and have resources for schools.

Qcng · 17/12/2018 22:57

courderoy
No.
I was not familiar with that

WTF is that?
I want to puke and shoot at the same time at it.

Melamin · 17/12/2018 23:03

Ah yes the gender bread person - total mind fuck. Lures you in with the obvious and adds a load of woo rubbish in the same breath.

You would be better doing those questionnaires they used to have in Jackie or Blue Jeans magazines Grin

Nothing makes sense without the diagram there to remind you.

Dragon3 · 17/12/2018 23:37

What on earth did I just read?! Also unfamiliar.

Who has time for such naval gazing gender bread nonsense?

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 17/12/2018 23:52

“I think I will just be dd1”

brilliant Smile

jessstan2 · 17/12/2018 23:54

Very odd things 10 year olds are taught about nowadays.

Candidpeel · 18/12/2018 00:06

I'd go in and ask casually, no need to make a fuss but just ask what materials they are using. Take a look at the Bish UK "what is gender" page to see the dangerous pish going into schools....

This is the training mermaids give to teachers, pastoral staff etc.

I don't think I can listen to the whole hour and a half of that session Envy
