Sports Personality of the Year

I just watched SPOTY and there was a fantastic film about Billie Jean King and her campaign to achieve equality for women’s sport. It was so inspiring, but at the same time so depressing to think it’s a fight we might need to have all over again if the rules on transwomen’s participation in women’s sport continue to be relaxed. I would love to know BJK’s views on the current situation, given how much she did to give sportswomen a voice.

It was great to see the women's netball team get recognised.
It is truly an all women's sport.
The year of the woman is coming to a close and I fear a backlash.

Every generation it seems that women have to fight for what they should just be due by rights. It's so unfair women are so lovely and they just get shat on from a great height every bloody generation.

I was pleased the netball team won team of the year. I thought they might, and once I saw that Southgate had won coach of the year, that the netball team must have won it because Tracy Neville deserves to win coach of the year much more than Southgate IMO. He did well, but she actually led a team to victory.

In football terms, the equivalent would be England beating Germany (if they'd actually played well) in the world cup final in Germany.

I voted for Dina Asher-Smith to win the main award, because she has had an amazing year and she really fits the 'personality' part of the award.

"My lawyer handed over an affidavit from Billie Jean King that said she had met me, that I was a woman, that I was entitled to play, and that I couldn't be denied. And that was it. We won

6ft 2 and in her forties...

Another entitled, narcissistic male who doesn’t give a shit about the impact of “their” actions on women. In “their” forties, FFS.

How sad that Billie Jean King enabled this cheat.

But on the bright side... Yay for the women’s netball team!

Let’s hope its significance drives home the message that women’s sport must be for women (adult human females) only.

Never thought we’d have to spell that out, eh.

I remember that time & that incident very well. 40 years ago transsexuals (who had had SRS, not transgenders who didn't even exist, certainly not publicly) were rare as hen's teeth. Not much was known about them or what caused them to take these drastic steps, beyond tabloid nonsense.

I suspect - nothing to base it on other than a gut feeling - that BJK may have actually felt some sympathy for RR. If that were true, there is no way that BJK or anyone else might have foreseen a situation when self-ID, intact, males were popping up (pun not intended) all over the place demanding a spot in women's space & competitions.

I thought having all those successful sportswomen on stage while Billie collected her award was terrific. And she looked very pleased to see them there.

andyoldlabour · 17/12/2018 15:24

Why is it, that the likes of Richards and other transgender people are so economical with the truth. The remarks about women's serving speed against men's serving speed are just the usual codswallop served up by transgenders. Here are lists of the fastest ever serves by men and women, which also shows how tall the players are.

Nothing to see here folks, no differences at all - oh dear my pants seem to be on fire again.

I watched SPOTY last night, and to be honest, although I like football, no England team member deserved an award - we finished 4th.
However, in my opinion there was one young lady who did deserve to be there but was missing - Georgia Hall the 2018 Women's British Open golf champion, the first English champion in 14 years.
