Pink news looking for girls for a video on binding

Pink news are looking for "trans or non-binary people" to appear in a film about how to "safely use a binder". Using advice from the same LGBT foundation that advised a caller that they'd send a teenage girl one without her parents knowledge.

There's no money to be made in the practice (apart from the medical costs to try to mitigate the effects later in life) if women use cling film rather than commercial binders

NothingOnTellyAgain · 15/12/2018 20:40

Fucking hell normal bras are uncomfy enough, as DH will attest to with my regular taking it off after work - throwing it down - and ranting about the "sexist ageist" garments.

Where girls bind their breasts, or have them bound, in other cultures, we say oh no that's awful. Apparently when girls here do it it's somehow OK though.

PN are going to make vidoes showing topless women (girls?) is how this reads to me. Hurrah.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 15/12/2018 20:45

Someone on another thread said they didn't understand why women wore bras, that if a woman stopped wearing a bra to work no-one would notice.

It was one of the more bonkers things I've read on here Grin

Anyway. I firmly believe that a proprortion (large I would guess) of girls who bind do so to try and escape the male gaze. Growing breasts is seen by men as a sign that you are "old enough" no matter how old you actually are. It is the strart of the eyeing, the leering, the up and down looks, the comments. Many many girls hate this and try to cover up teh obvious cause for this uncomfortable, embarrassing, scary change in behaviour from a too-large minority of men. They used to wear baggy clothes / starve themselves when I was at school. Breast binding is a great solution for this. Of course loads of girls are doing it. Seems obvious to me but, whatever. Nothing new. Nothing progressive. Same old thing of girls trying to do something, anything to put men off.

Do you think we have any chance of getting rid of societal expectations to wear bras by going on strike?
There's more pressing societal issues, but lots of women take their bras off after work. Doing something about it might show women feminism really improves their lives.

/ offtopic.

The whole transgenderism thing is taking things we would normally consider horrible and reframe them to make them okay.

If it was radical feminists cutting of men's dicks and testicles, we would be accused of being man-hating monsters.

But it is male doctors doing it in the service of the holy gender grail, so it's okay.

Sterilizing homosexual children? Horrible - except if you hold the holy gender grail, then it's okay.

Gay conversion therapy? Worst thing ever, unless done to lesbians in the service of the all-important transwoman penis, then it's okay.

No wonder that the binding of body parts is suddely okay when done in the service of gender.

(Nevermind that footbinding in China was also a gendered practice and never done to boys ...)

Well, it wouldn't do to assume their sex, but I have my suspicions.

I think I get away with not wearing a bra myself (small breasts + baggy, thick clothes) but asking someone if they can tell I'm not wearing a bra wouldn't be appropriate. (Though I am quite sure my mother would swiftly inform me if I looked too nonconforming. She can be relied upon to be the voice of the averagely sexist citizen.)

NothingOnTellyAgain · 15/12/2018 20:58

"Do you think we have any chance of getting rid of societal expectations to wear bras by going on strike? "

You mean all stop wearing them?

Thing is men would stare and stare and stare. And make comments. And shout. It would be awful. I mean it would work ih the end but it would be v tough. And I think very few women would join in.

Untethered female breasts > depending on age of owner > are estraordnarily over-sexualised or considered grotesque. And that's just the truth.

I think my boobs look better without my top on TBH which is interesting as it means sometihng about having clothes on means I expect them to be up there and having them down there looks wrong. While naked they look fine.

Just a random thought splurge :D

reallyanotherone · 15/12/2018 21:01

I think i might apply :)

By the usual gender definitions (see gender stereotypes), i am non binary. I work in stem, don’t wear skirts, dresses, heels or make up. My university mates in the psychology dept once did a test on me showing I have a “male brain”.

Anyone else? Lets all apply and sho yhem what “non binary” aka most women looks like....

Even if it was done in winter with thick, wooly jumpers worn over them?
I mean, I don't even know what it looks like when a woman with big breasts doesn't wear a bra. Since everyone wears a bra.

Well, I'll continue to push the boundaries a bit, in any case. Not out of any noble sentiment but mostly because I like being comfortable.

HestiaParthenos · 15/12/2018 21:07

I'm all for showing them what they get with self ID nonsense, but in this specific case, no.

I have worn an ill-fitting bra, and it was horrible and I worried I might have done myself permanent injury when I noticed a weird pain in my breasts (not pressure, just a stabbing pain that only happens when I try to wear bras).

Not going to demonstrate wearing binders. Not even for five minutes.

reallyanotherone · 16/12/2018 09:14

Oh me neither. Just thought it might quadruple their workload sorting through a few extra applications from perfectly normal women that fit their binary/non binary stereotypes. Especially when they are non-binary women that don’t feel the need to bind at all. I can reject female stereotypes without having to reject my physical body.

I don't think women should be judged negatively for not wearing bras. I hate the things and contrive all ways not to wear one, including simply going braless and not giving a fuck.

reallyanotherone · 16/12/2018 11:06

I like my bra. I have never worn underwires though- who the fuck thought of that? I tried one once and swore never again.

I wear soft cup sports bras only. I have fairly large breasts and would be much more uncomfortable without a bra. It is nice to take off at night in the same way that jeans or socks are. I did have really really soft nursing bras that i loved, but weren’t really supportive enough for every day.

As with most womens garments, to me bra’s are designed for looks, not for function or comfort. Fairly sure it would be possible to design a comfortable, supportive bra made out of soft tactile material. But no, lace, bows and satin on corset like structures that have a visual impact is what is sold on the high street. Fits the stereotype of “sexy woman”, along with matching g-string, and preferably suspender belt.

Sometimes it feels like there is little mid ground between ann summers and breast binding.

brizzledrizzle · 16/12/2018 11:11

So society campaigns again female genital mutilation on one hand but campaigns for breast mutilation on the other. The world has gone mad.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 11:15

"As with most womens garments, to me bra’s are designed for looks, not for function or comfort. "

YY

They are multipurpose > comments apply to women with breasts that are larger

They are to keep them in the "right" place ie up round your chin not heading downwards as gravity takes its toll > ageist. The purpose of this is to make your breasts look teenage if you are not > "saggy" boobs are as we all know the last word in awfulness. What "saggy" actually means is "normal for anyone over about 25".

They are to stop them moving around as if you are young and good looking this is deemed outrageously sexually provocative or if you are older or have bigger breasts (which always hang a bit lower due to weight) it is considered obsecene, genuinely obscene as in look away

Many are sold as packaging, wih "fancy little knickers" they make the womans body a present for a man to unwrap / or they are to appeal to the male gaze

Re previous comments. I hope no-one on this thread would say women should be jusdged for not wearing a bra.

To the person who asked what it looks like when a woman with larger breasts doesn't wear a bra > well they move around a lot. They swing about when you move. They are lower slung than when they are kept in check with a bra. The baggy jumpers may work, but not something to wear in my workplace really. Yes it would be obvious. No I'm not going to try it Grin

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 11:21

And I mean mine aren't even enormous.

The women I know with enormous boobs > the ones who had them as girls > have experienced a lot of pain (back) and a vast amount of sexual harrassment, from a young age, and have spent a fortune on bras to try and confine them in relative comfort to conform them to society ie stop them being too much, obscene. Sruggled to find clothes that fit properly. Loads of stuff.

It's all a bit shit really.

Oatomatom · 16/12/2018 11:28

The last time a non-family male saw me without a bra (high necked pyjama top) I suddenly realised that it was a big issue. It was a Tesco deliveryman and he stood in front of me and gawped as I repeatedly bent and stood to unpack the crates full of food. It was most uncomfortable and I now don’t get into pyjamas until Tesco has been and gone. I’m sure a teen girl would have been mortified - I was mostly pissed off.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 11:43

I dont' wear a bra at home generally and if my FIL pops round or a delivery person comes they just have to live with it.

I am stubborn so not going to give in :D

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 11:45

But yes it is a big deal. Not socially acceptable. They sometimes don't know where to look.

Fuckign bras. For women with larger boobs they are all about reining in, suppressing, ,minimising the grotesque obscene otherness of teh female body. Or something :D Men feel uncomfotable with unfettered tits swinging about the place. Women too TBF. It's just not done, is it.

JellySlice · 16/12/2018 14:15

I get viral rash when I'm ill. It covers my body from hips upwards. The rash does not appear at all in the areas where my bra presses on me. It looks like I have the outline of a bra drawn on my shoulders, back and sides. The 'drawing' is flesh-coloured in a sea of pink rash. This happens whether or not I wear a bra while ill.

Can't help wondering what 50y of bra-wearing has done to my skin and the underlying tissues.

HestiaParthenos · 16/12/2018 16:24

Men feel uncomfotable with unfettered tits swinging about the place.

Not only that. They are afraid of them.

Most cultures seem to have myths about female demons/fairies with long, saggy breasts.

The Bean nighe is said to look like this in some places, according to wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bean_nighe

The Slattenplatte or Nordic mythology has saggy breasts, too: humoncomics.com/slattenpatte (Humon describes her as mostly benevolent, but we know women's rights are in a rather better state in those cultures than elsewhere, hmmm)

The German corn demon Roggenmuhme has long breasts, too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feldgeister#Roggenmuhme

The latter two both seem to usually throw their long breasts over their shoulders to be able to run better.

One might say that women have breasts and old women have saggy breasts so that mythology would naturally acknowledge that ... but one rarely hears about old men demons with wrinkly penises. Wink

HestiaParthenos · 16/12/2018 16:29

Good question.

I think there's even theories that bras are what makes breasts saggy, what with damaging the tissue.
(And the claim that breasts get saggy from not wearing a bra is definitely proven wrong)

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 21:13

Breasts head south over time because gravity.

Same as scrotums but no one goes on about that.

Lower slung boobs tends to mean older woman and we know how popular they are :D
