Thank you that was really interesting. The point about the French judiciary bring appointed on academic merit really made me think.

Absolutely.
I can't comment now as school run and toddlers to sort, but there is so much there that could be expanded on.

The article is wrong about judicial appointments in this country being done on the basis of a ‘tap in the shoulder’ by ‘male dominated networks’.
Since 2006 the Judicial Appointments Commission has held competitions for all judicial posts.
I emailed the BBC this lunchtime to ask them to correct the article but no reply yet.

Thanks for that correction.
Does that mean that the imbalance is correcting itself now?

Here are the stats:
www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/judicial-diversity-statistics-2018-1.pdf

Among the more junior judicial posts it’s closer to 50/50 which reflects that new barristers and solicitors are slightly more likely to be women than men. It will take longer for higher judicial posts because they recruit from senior QCs who currently are more likely to be men so there’s a smaller pool of women to choose from. Women who apply to become a QC are more likely than men to get it, so in time even the higher judicial posts will become 50/50. In my experience the Bar (at least the non-legal-aid Bar) is quite meritocratic. Women do drop out around the child bearing years but that’s generally because they’ve chosen to prioritise their husband’s job.

Maybe I missed something but I thought that the judiciary comment wasn't reflecting the UK situation.
I thought the general message that the less powerful a body was, the more likely that females have higher representation. So, representation alone is a poor indicator of balance of power.
