FFS! "Ooh it was only joke and I am sorry if anyone was offended" said some French DJ

Why? The first female winner of the Ballon D'Or and some stupid non sporting twat asks her if she can twerk?

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Glad she looked uncomfortable with the "joke" and didn't laugh along while fuming inside.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 04/12/2018 08:32

yeah, I heard this on the radio this morning. Ungh. Forehead slap

still at least the news coverage i heard was very much of the WTF? view

Katvonblackdeath · 04/12/2018 08:43

Silly man. Glad he apologised. What a thing to say.

Lumisade · 04/12/2018 08:53

It's not really an apology though is it, saying to people that he's sorry if they've taken offence? He's not acknowledged that his behaviour was appalling, he thinks that other people have taken it the wrong way.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/12/2018 08:57

His apology contained that "sorry if you were offended" line! Sorry but if you follow me you will now I didn't mean it.

Yes, he asked all the men if they danced, but he didn't ask if any of them could twerk or any other sexually provocative dance, he saved that for the woman!

That he can't see it just shows how much he has internalised that 'lessening' of women! He says as much when he says "I am always respectful especially with women"

He even tries to use his lack of English as an excuse - he asked the question in French, he is French!!

Poor woman - to have her great moment celebrating her achievements undermined by a sexist fool.

Micke · 04/12/2018 09:11

Silly man. Glad he apologised. What a thing to say.

He didn't though - he said it was a joke, he doesn't see what he did that was wrong.

LizzieSiddal · 04/12/2018 09:37

This made me so angry.

The only good thing is that his misogyny has made the news. We are making a bit of progress at least.Hmm

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/12/2018 09:41

Slightly besides the point but I was fair Angry at newsround this morning.(never watch it but ds had found it)

Their reporting of the event initially centred around the male footballer having won; for the first time in 10 years it not being one of two others. Then oh it's the first year a woman has been included and this is who won.

Honestly, IMO, tiny adjustments such as making the women's award the headline would really make a massive difference. I get that football is predominately male; all the more reason to elevate the women's award to the headline. IMFO. (In my feminist opinion)

Subtle things like this feed into the unconscious.

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/12/2018 09:42

I don't think they mentioned the twerking at all. Which is extra Angry.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/12/2018 10:03

It is invidious, isn't it?

It should have been a pretty momentous Ballon D'Or, given the changes they had made this year. But the weird choice of host, who seemed to think it was his very own stage to show off on, ruined it for all I think. He seemed to have no off button or real sense of the occasion!

Andy Murray has weighed in saying how angry he was. He is always good on this stuff.

Andy, care to comment on men taking women's sporting careers for themselves too?

CocoCharlie83 · 04/12/2018 10:45

Ridiculous comment to make.

And it is also terrible that some random is giving out the award and not one of the sport's greats which hand over the men's award.

Popchyk · 04/12/2018 11:18

Andy Murray comments:

Talksport link

"He wrote on Instagram: “Another example of the ridiculous sexism that still exists in sport – why do women still have to put up with that s*?

“What questions did they ask Mbappe and Modric? I’d imagine something to do with football.

“And to everyone who thinks people are overreacting and it was just a joke… It wasn’t.

“I’ve been involved in sport my whole life and the level of sexism is unreal.”

OlennasWimple · 04/12/2018 12:34

Every now and again DH and I ahve a conversation along the lines of "have women achieved equality?" - the last one was pretty heated TBH. DH saw this story this morning and said that he was beginning to see my point, that it's not the big stuff (legal protections etc), but the smaller everyday stuff, and the stuff that would have been unremarked on 5 years ago.

Baby steps, folks, baby steps

Lottapianos · 04/12/2018 12:38

'...the stuff that would have been unremarked on 5 years ago. '

I think you're right. This would not have drawn much comment 5 years ago. Things are changing slowly but DEAR GOD, such a long way to go

Good work Andy Murray. I hope he speaks up about transwomen in sport one day soon

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/12/2018 12:40

It's up there with the podium marriage proposals imo

God forbid a woman is known for an actual achievement Hmm

It's not even an.apology

It's a "sorry it offended people "
Not the same thing. No recognition of how inappropriate and degrading it is.

And of course a 23 yr old women is not gonna "kill her career " by calling out the men domineering the show Angry

CleanArea · 04/12/2018 12:48

Could they not have found a stunning and brave transwoman to fill the second slot? Tut.

Danaquestionseverything · 04/12/2018 12:55

Good to see so many people calling this guy out. What amazes me (or maybe not) is after so many examples of bad public fauxpoligies, idiots still try and get away with it.

Idiots gonna idiot, I guess.

Gooseflesh · 04/12/2018 13:08

I am waiting for Murray, and Judy, and Martina, and other people who call themselves feminists etc to mention male bodied people in women's sports. So far nothing. I understand how difficult it is to put the head above the paraphet, but it must come from them first, their voices will embolden other women. Male allies are always welcome, but this from Murray feels like easy cookies in comparison to what else he could be talking about or bringing attention to.

TeenTimesTwo · 04/12/2018 14:06

Unbelievable.

Agree, it would be great if someone peak-transed Andy Murray.

SylvanianFrenemies · 04/12/2018 17:08

I think that's too hard on Andy Murray, Gooseflesh. He's shown himself to be a female ally time and time again. But first and foremost he is a tennis player. He's not obliged to raise all issues affecting women in sport.

Gooseflesh · 04/12/2018 17:34

Its true he is a female ally, but he is also a big defender and friend of the likes of Nick Kyrgios, who was fined for making repeated 'wanker' gestures during a match.
That's not sexist, but it is imo offensive and indefensible.

I'd love to live in a world where women's voices on sexism get more attention than men's, however well meaning they are.

Gooseflesh · 04/12/2018 17:38

To be clear, Kyrgios mimicked masturbation with a water bottle, on the court at the change of ends, not only a hand gesture.

But yes, I agree Murray isn't obligated. I'm just frustrated at the silence. From everyone, though I do understand it.

ohamIreally · 04/12/2018 19:28

I saw this. The expression on her face as she turned away and said "no". You could just see her happiness turning to that disgusted stomach sinking feeling where she realised she was going to have to deal with this shit, once again, and that her moment was ruined.
It's just so nasty, reminding this woman that in spite of her achievements she is in fact, just an object and her function is to entertain the men (by twerking, not playing football don't you know).
Really angry for her.
