I think I'd be becoming best friends with the baristas at the closest place with proper toilets.

dogzdinner · 03/12/2018 09:38

It does state there are still male and female toilets. And a quick Google tells me that they haven't changed any existing toilets, just added these as extras.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 03/12/2018 09:41

Oh I missed the statement where it says there are still male and female loos. But in reality these days - can women question a bloke in the ladies without being bullied for being transphobic? Nope.

Needmoresleep · 03/12/2018 09:43

For me it is not just about cubicles, but the room. What happens if I spill coffee on my blouse and need to change, or want to get ready for something after work.

Its fine. PPs, Aimee Challenor, BBC bosses and Pips Bunce would all, presumably, tell me that it is fine.

They won't ask me because I am only a women and in their world I am not entitled to a view.

The BBC has lots of buildings. My bet is that there is more choice of provision in larger buildings. Gender neutral toilets are not a problem at DH's work as their building has male, female and gender neutral on each floor. He claims not to have seen anyone use the last, which says a bit about preferences. In contrast I met someone working for a University whose building only has gender neutral loos, and who regularly sees female, muslim and overseas students walking out in the rain to go to the single sex. Discrimination in action, or have we accepted that a small number of "influencers" get to dictate societal change over majority wishes.

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/12/2018 09:45

I would love to believe that they haven't just relabelled all the disabled toilets to be these "new" single occupancy "gender neutral" toilets for all. But I am dubious.

Bowlofbabelfish · 03/12/2018 10:24

Are those contained cubicles were are told are the answer big enough to get a buggy in?

If not, how is a woman with a child or a couple of kids in a buggy to use the loo safely? I usually go the the end one and jam the buggy in the door. I cannot carry two kids into a cubicle with me and I cannot leave them outside safely. In the women only loo, I often see women doing this. I would NEVER be able to safelyndo it in the setup described above, ie a bank of cubicles accessible by either sex.

It is important to have SINGLE SEX areas.

WongaGoneWronga · 03/12/2018 13:15

Not very slammy rally though is it?
"“As a man, I’m not too bothered by the idea, but I am a bit."

And this is a bloke who complains publicly and on the record about the BBC being run by tough women...
"The BBC is even more grotesquely managed now than it was then [with] tough women running the place now. "

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/12/2018 18:50

More people have kids than are trans and yet there is less provision of blocks with one or two larger cubicles with room for prams and maybe even a smaller child's toilet. Funny that.

dogzdinner · 03/12/2018 19:02

This is a workplace. Why would they need to prioritise toilets for children?

morningtoncrescent62 · 03/12/2018 19:03

I'm GC and getting more and more exercised by trans ideology every day, but I can't actually see the problem here, provided the Beeb is telling the truth. So long as there still are separate loos with enough for women, and the gender neutral ones are in separate cubicles, I don't think there's anything wrong. It's trans ideology I object to, not trans people per se, and if some additional gender neutral loos make for a better working life for a minority however small then I'm all for it. However, if it means some areas are without separate women's loos, or there aren't enough and women have to queue, then it's not reasonable.

museumum · 03/12/2018 19:12

I think I'd be becoming best friends with the baristas at the closest place with proper toilets.

All the coffee shops round here have one or two toilets, both for use by either sex and people using wheelchairs. Thankfully the men seem to manage to use them in a civilised manner as they do they’d home toilet.

Don’t get me wrong, I do not want penises in women’s toilets with communal sink area, but I can’t see the problem with any sex using single occupancy toilets.

ihatethecold · 03/12/2018 19:16

My dh works at broadcasting house.
They still have separate toilets for men and women.

Why does it matter if there is also other toilets as long as there are still male and female ones?

SoftSheen · 03/12/2018 19:16

There's nothing wrong with having mixed-gender toilets alongside existing male and female ones. This could potentially benefit not only transgender individuals, but those who might require extra privacy and a sink to e.g. change a colostomy bag.

At our local shopping centre (in Cambridge), there are male and female toilets, disabled toilets, a parent and child toilet and a gender-neutral toilet. All bases covered Grin

FlyMaybe · 04/12/2018 01:05

Is this the same John Simpson that disguised himself in a burka to sneak into Afghanistan ahead of the US invasion force? Wonder which loos he used them...

LizzieSiddal · 04/12/2018 07:42

If there are plenty of single sex toilets I can’t see a problem.
I wonder if we could find out how
many of each toilet there are?

HestiaParthenos · 04/12/2018 22:42

Why does it matter if there is also other toilets as long as there are still male and female ones?

Considering there is a very, very, very, very, very widespread problem with lack of proper toilets for women (men aren't as affected as they can piss everywhere), and we muggles can't create wizard space (www.hp-lexicon.org/magic/wizard-space/) it is very unlikely this won't negatively affect women. Unless they just make the male toilets unisex.

Maybe some employers are willing to sacrifice space that could have gone to other purposes for making new unisex toilets, but if small businesses are pressured to offer unisex toilets, women will be the ones to suffer for it.
