Another balanced article from the Mail highlighting the dangers of teenagers accessing these drugs:

There's an interesting quote from Mermaids in that article.

Mermaids, a charity supporting transgender children, said the drugs ‘can subject a young person to distressing bodily changes that can lead to an increased risk of anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal ideas’.

Either Mermaids have changed their tune or they've been misquoted.

Apollo440 · 01/12/2018 09:04

Isn't this a misquote. I think they may be talking about the effects of puberty not the drugs. I found this quote on the Mermaids website.

"They may find the changes of puberty very upsetting, and a lot of trans teens begin to get very depressed, withdrawn and may even self-harm or have suicidal feelings."

Floisme · 01/12/2018 09:14

If it’s a misquote it’s genius. They will be going apeshit but it would be tricky to come out and correct it without showing their hand. Grin

OldCrone · 01/12/2018 09:14

So when Mermaids see the quote, will they ask the Mail to correct it? Because if they do, it will look as though they agree with children buying the drugs online.

Needmoresleep · 01/12/2018 09:29

It is very sad. DD is only 20 and I feel we missed a bullet. Neither she or her elder brother ever mentioned anyone transitioning at school, yet within a few years it appears that their old schools, and just about every comparable school in the area, have transitioning pupils. A new parental nightmare to add to anorexia, drugs etc, but this time perhaps without the same societal sympathy and support.

scepticalwoman · 01/12/2018 10:48

Needmoresleep
So true - and not just the absence of sympathy and support but the prospect of actual hostility and deliberate alienation from your child initiated by activists. So scary.

Quote from the Tavistock from that article acknowledges detranstioners.

‘It is incredibly dangerous to buy these online,’ said the spokesperson, who pointed out that many young people later change their mind about changing sex. ‘By getting drugs off the internet, adolescents may start on a path they don’t want to tread later on.’

My understanding of male to female surgery is that the penis is used to create the neo vagina and clitoris. If a young boy takes hormone blockers which arrest normal genital development they will be left with insufficient material to work with in future surgery. This surely must be a significant point in the long term consequences of hormone blockers for young people, who could end up in a lose -lose situation regardless of what choice they ultimately make?

OldCrone · 01/12/2018 11:44

This effect is very well known, but is swept under the carpet by TRAs in favour of the argument that if a child doesn't go through a male puberty, they will superficially 'pass' better as a woman.

TRAs, many of whom seem to be obsessed by sex, apparently have no qualms about encouraging young people to transition very early and consequently having no sexual function whatsoever.

This is one option. Other options also exist. For example in some countries the preferred method is to use a section of intestine which is self lubricating and doesnt require intensive dilation.

thethoughtfox · 01/12/2018 12:50

I think that is what happened to Jazz Jennings. She was devastated when told be surgeons that the penis hadn't grown enough to mould a vagina out of.

Bowlofbabelfish · 01/12/2018 12:57

The mermaids quote: isn’t that what they say about puberty?

Someone needs to challenge them on that Grin is it what they say bout drugs, or puberty?

uglyandlovingit · 01/12/2018 13:13

Another decent article from the Daily Mail!

scotsheather · 01/12/2018 13:59

Yes thats what happened with Jazz Jennings, the poster boy for boys wanting to be girls. One in the eye for promoters of these blockers for kids.

Re: Mermaids -- is it my imagination or have they given some indications of moving away from puberty blockers? I'm thinking of some of what came out of that international conference a few weeks back. I can't remember now what the alternative they wanted was, just that it looked like they were starting to backpedal on that. If this quote is correct, that would be more evidence of that. Sorry this post is so vague, I just don't remember more than my impression that they were starting to get turned off puberty blockers because of the horrid side effects.

VickyEadie · 01/12/2018 15:30

I don't recall, but it would be good if someone had a link or further information.

It seems unlikely, however, given their leader's personal history with their own child...

LemonJello · 01/12/2018 15:33

Yes Grace, I think you’re right. I’m sure there was something in favour of just starting cross sex hormones straight away so they can go through ‘puberty’ with their peers.

Really keen to know if this quote is accurate or not.

VickyEadie · 01/12/2018 15:36

Cross-sex hormones given to a boy magically transforming them into a pubescent girl, being the thinking?

LemonJello · 01/12/2018 15:38

Yes Vicky, pretty sure it was something like that. Mermaids have definitely been campaigning for lowering the age cross sex hormones can be prescribed and I’m sure this was the rationale. It would make sense that they would now uturn on puberty blockers to bolster this position.

Thingybob · 01/12/2018 15:58

The quote would still not make sense as the drugs that the article is referring to are both hormone blockers and cross sex hormones.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 01/12/2018 16:03

If it is a deliberate misquote, it was a genius move.

LemonJello · 01/12/2018 16:03

But perhaps that the bit that’s been misquoted. DM refer to generic ‘drugs’ when puberty blockers were what was meant.

Who knows though.

LemonJello · 01/12/2018 16:04

If it is a deliberate misquote, it was a genius move.

Yep

OldCrone · 01/12/2018 16:26

DM refer to generic ‘drugs’ when puberty blockers were what was meant.

Puberty blockers wouldn't lead to 'distressing bodily changes', though. And the article mentions testosterone and oestrogen as well as triptorelin (hormone blocker).

The Mermaids quote could only apply to the effects of either cross-sex hormones or puberty itself. But it wouldn't look good for them if they got it changed.

GraceTheDisgrace · 01/12/2018 17:39

LemonJello yes yes going straight to cross-sex hormones rings a bell. Mermaids basically saying "okay fine puberty blockers are horrid for children, let's just put the 10 yr old on testosterone then."
