On the Times article in favour of the Nordic model for prostitution, here:
www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/criminalising-punters-is-the-only-way-to-curb-prostitution-hf8fwjjtd

I commented this morning - there were quite a few comments, mostly pro de-crim, but reasonably civil if naive. Did anyone follow how it unfolded through the day? Did the comments degenerate into a complete bunfight? Or did the pimp lobby get on the case and spam it so obviously that it became clear that the comments weren't a genuine reflection of the public mood?

(I challenged someone on the "but what will the poor men do if they can't buy sex?" line of thought.)

I think too many comments were disagreeing with the Nordic Model, so they were disabled because that isn't what the article's author wanted to hear

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/11/2018 18:49

Is that what happened tracey or is that your best guess

happydappy2 · 29/11/2018 18:56

at about 10am the large majority of comments were ridiculing the author-very depressing-many men assume that the women have power over the men paying.....they are soooo blinkered to the potential trafficking, drug use etc

happy I know, it was so depressing. And lots of comments about it being ok unless it's coerced. No understanding that financial desperation = a form of coercion.

I commented on that thread in favour of the Norwegian model of criminalising punters. They often seem to remove comments as I also commented on the university suicide article complaining at the lack of comparative statistics and pointing out that relatives don't have an obligation to tell universities if a student kills themselves. Medical confidentiality often covers the deceased as well.
All those comments went I think because most people wondered like me why the Times had singled out that particular uni.

My Times subscription notification has switched itself off and as I'm on holiday I hadn't been reading it so I missed this article.

FermatsTheorem · 29/11/2018 23:45

Yes, you're right. It's so depressing that so many people don't see financial desperation as a form of coercion.

(And I don't think the comments can have been switched off simply because the majority disagreed. My sense was the proportions at that point reflected the percentages on the Times' reader poll on the subject, which is hovering round the 40-60 mark, pro/anti Nordic model. That was already the case when I made my comment, so I don't think that on its own explains why comments were switched off. I was wondering if something happened later.)

They disappear unsavory content. Buzzfeed had an article about a pregnant sex-worker. Can't find it now. They referred to lactation as a revenue stream
