Orwell for the next £20 note?

If we end up with a woman on the fifty pound note do you think there's a chance of critical thinkers uniting in favour of putting George Orwell on the twenty pound note?

The whole woke bloke / trans mess shows his ideas and books are as important and relevant now as when they were first published.

(Also this would drive the likes of Squealer / Sanctimonious Morph round the bend as they see him as a Traitor to the Left).

I would vote for him to be on the £20 note.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 28/11/2018 16:36

I can see the appeal, but I'd much rather a woman (adult human female sort) on the note.

glenthebattleostrich · 28/11/2018 16:36

I'd love Orwell to be on a note

SkullPointerException · 28/11/2018 16:42

Not looking to derail, but: why would Orwell be considered a traitor?

Yes, he was critical, and very rightly so, of totalitarian leftists, notably Soviet communism - but Orwell was an ardent socialist and, AFAIK, remained one throughout his life (someone better versed correct me). He just correctly pointed out that totalitarianism is kind of a really shit idea regardless of the ideology/political philosophy it purports to serve.

And, yes to Orwell on my money!

BSS
I understand, this being Feminist Chat and all, just think he's particularly relevant with the rise of the Authoritarian Woke.

SPE
At some point he supplied the names of people he considered to be Communist sympathisers
He obviously thought it the right thing to do, others disagree (despite his life's work essentially being to show how all Totalitarian systems will end up).

No. If you want to be critical of government control, best not to hand a list of names over to a chap from the Foreign Office.

SkullPointerException · 28/11/2018 17:00

Ah, okay, THAT ... I'm familiar. I'd filed that under 'leftist infighting' and hadn't considered it. Thanks!

I suppose the distinction to be drawn is that the names he was handing to a government that could (and eventually was) removed by the electorate were, in his opinion, in favour of a system in which their preferred party would be in power forever.

I seem to have derailed my own thread but it's important to acknowledge the controversy before saying that, imho, it's comprehensively outweighed by the contribution he made and the legacy he left with 1984, Animal Farm and many, many more.

It's all a bit academic though... wiki tells me the current Adam Smith £20 is due to be replaced in 2020 with Turner.

Ah yes, you're right.

Perhaps it would be fittingly Orwellian to introduce a thirteen pound note in his honour.

Orwell would be great. I only read 1984 quite recently. I was really blown away by it - by the mind of a man who could capture all that truth in a novel.
