OK, so following on from the genderbread graphic being tweeted from a girls school in the UK, I thought I would have a look into the person who made it a bit more and am currently watching his tex talk about the complexities of gender.

So far he seems to be very much about breaking down gender.. so I#m a bit confused about the jump to transition_

Anyway, it#s kinda interesting.

OK, now I'm watching the Katie Couric vid about the genderbread man.

It's all the "Gender identity" as being who you are stuff that is soo super irritating about it. It takes personality and self expression and puts those things into the gender box.

Why do that?

Anyhoo, still interesting to see what this guys deal is as it's his resources that are being used in our schools. (not my schools, but your schools!)

And this is the teaching notes about the Genderbread person. I haven't looked at this yet, and don't know if all this has been shared here before but as it's come up again recently, it's worth having a look for those who haven't seen it.

The intersex bit annoys me most (though it's all ridiculous more or less). It is not possible for someone to be a little bit male and a lot female. Humans are either male with a chromosomal anomaly or female with a chromosomal anomaly.

TimeLady · 28/11/2018 11:53

I keep envisaging the annoyingly brattish gingerbread man in Shrek.

This is his bit about gender neutral (or mixed) bathrooms:

itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2017/03/lets-talk-about-bathrooms/

Seems to miss a few really important points, that if the facilities are mixed, it's not just transwomen who will be sharing bathrooms with women and girls, but every man. So, his safety argument gets blown up a bit there.

Also, no mention of privacy as far as I could see from scanning.

I do like his little toilet sign though.

Humans are either male with a chromosomal anomaly or female with a chromosomal anomaly.

I think some people are fascinated with the misconception that intersex people being hermaphrodites.

What is true about them - and much less interesting - is what Blythe said.

PurpleOva · 28/11/2018 12:14

The Genderbread guy does seem to be fairly clear about biological sex being separate from gender.

I was nodding along with most of the Tedtalk, so the conclusion that it means we need gender neutral bathrooms and that we have a gender identity seemed incompatible to what he was saying about gender being about time and place and the social construct that we all know it is.

Is this the one where they are given a fact sheet that has gender, social presentation and sex and under sex it says 'sex - infinite number of sexes'
We are getting a school nurse to talk the children through that (year7)

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 28/11/2018 13:27

Well that's the thing - so much of it does seem reasonable, so peoole are lulled into nodding along with all the reasonableness and then get led to a point where they are saying humans can change sex just like clownfish. It's a timeshare tactic.

But I hate that it talks about “gender identity” as though you have to ask yourself “what is my gender identity”. As I see it, I don’t have a gender identity. I am a woman, because my biology dictates that. Then I get on with life, if I feel like putting make up on or shaving my legs, I do, even if a man explains it’s not very feminist. If I feel like slobbing around in jeans and men’s jumpers I do. I look after my kids. I used to have a challenging career. Growing up as a young woman, I dealt with the usual crap that women do. I ignored gender expectations. I did not “lighten up” when some drunken idiot tried to maul me. When men in car leered from car windows at traffic lights I told them to f* off. I was lucky enough to work in areas where employers had effective equality policies. I was aware of gender as a construct. But I didn’t “identify”.

This stuff seems to encourage artificial navel gazing. Just reading it gives me a headache. Young children and adolescents have enough to worry about without this rubbish. I’m hoping my children’s schools do not start talking about this stuff.

This one makes more sense to me.

Oh wow! I just saw a photo of this being used in a school on Twitter. All if the students present were girls.

PurpleOva · 29/11/2018 13:33

That's brilliant PainintheEar I like that one a lot!

I've just realised it has male/female/intersex when it probably should just be male/female (as people with intersex conditions are still male or female).

I've done a dodgy paint job amended it

That nonsense hurts my brain too and I'm a mature intelligent woman so I can't see how a teenager would ever have the ability or confidence to challenge any of this mumbo jumbo.

By definition that makes it indoctrination not education.

Soooo perfectly put.

AspieAndProud · 29/11/2018 21:26

Navel gazing is underrated. Look at your navel. That was once linked to your mother. It wasn’t linked to your father. That’s one difference between the sexes.

This is what gendered intelligence support

In Chile, young people over the age of 14 are now able to change their name and gender in official records. It's time that young people in the UK under the age of 18 are afforded the same rights.
