NYTimes: A Vagina Won't Make Me Happy - But It's My Right to Get One Anyway

New opinion piece by "essayist & critic" Andrea Long Chu that says drastic medical interventions such as hormones & genital surgeries should be given on demand to trans people - even when they're so deeply unhappy they feel suicidal, & they're convinced the treatments they're demanding will only make them more miserable.

Why? 1) Because the "true purpose" of medicine's "first do no harm" maxim "is not to shield patients from injury but to install the medical professional as a little king of someone else’s body." And 2) because "the negative passions — grief, self-loathing, shame, regret — are as much a human right as universal health care, or food."

Since many people won't be able to access the article, I'll copy & paste it, with apologies to copyright holder(s).

I meant if someone is paying to have treatment then they can fill their boots...

If someone pays they can do what they like to themselves whether the medical profession agrees or not

Not you.....the royal you Grin

Honestly, i now understand where you are coming from , though i dont think my post was THAT odd

Anyway, apology accepted and im sorry if my post led you to believe i was having a pop at you

I think the medical treatment of wealthy people with odd health beliefs like Michael Jackson show that even if you're paying for medical treatment you shouldn''t get what you want. Getting a doctor to give you an anaesthetic to help you to sleep should never have been possible and then there is all the dubious plastic surgery on his facial structure. People want some weird crap done to themselves sometimes. Helping them harm and mutilate themselves shouldn't be in any doctor's role..

Can I just have the money? If it's my 'right' to have a vagina, can I instead take 90% of the cost in cash, NHS would save 10%.

We now live in a world where people can cry 1. I am so oppressed and subsequently 2. my demands are 'rights'. McKinnon also argues that TW in women's sports is not a question of fairness but of TW's 'human rights'. It's incredibly insidious but sadly very effective - who wants to argue against someone's 'human rights'?

AngryAttackKittens · 26/11/2018 23:19

Hey, everyone be nice to our resident reindeer, who is frankly often kinder to other people than they deserve.

[glitterbal] [glitterbal] Rufus Star Star

Grammatical issues, which most posters here (I'm assuming - so, shoot me!) would have understood. I'm sure many of us didn't jump to 'so you're implying someone else is having SRS'. Almost odder for someone to jump to that implication!

Sending shite flowers and reindeer poo to you.

pombear · 26/11/2018 23:31

Oh crap, my glitterballs didn't glitter.

Here you go Rufus - have some balls that truly glitter my lovely! (Though they look a bit sad and grey, despite their identifying as glitterballs!)

Glitterball Glitterball

pombear · 26/11/2018 23:33

Not relevant to thread at all, ignore, ignore. All about the 'glitterball' emojis.

In my head I have already named them 'grumpy balls' due to their distinct greyness and fucked-off look about them. Maybe that's because my eyesight is not as it was, but they look like bombs, not glitterati!

AngryAttackKittens · 26/11/2018 23:36

They're a bit depressed looking, aren't they? Maybe designed to reflect the British climate, so they glitter in a grey, subdued sort of way.

pombear · 26/11/2018 23:48

AAK grey glinting balls perhaps? Or just 'Grey balls' will be enough for us to celebrate in our new grey, 'can't say anything' new order?

FYI to other fellow posters, when I post glitterballs I will be saying:-

"sad grey ball sack in the age of both Brexit and male genitaiia = female world"

Badmoonsarising · 26/11/2018 23:54

Yip, not happy at all!
