www.feministcurrent.com/2018/10/30/new-zealand-green-lighting-gender-identity-ideology-policy-without-considering-consequences/
A few excerpts:
Official Information Act requests have revealed that there are currently approximately 33 trans-identified males in New Zealand prisons, and that 18 are in for violent crimes, including sexual assault. Seven of these individuals are are currently housed in women’s prisons (though none have sexual assault convictions). Corrections has admitted that, since January 2017, at least six assaults have been perpetrated by trans-identified prisoners in women’s prisons.
And
This year, Malcolm “Morgana” Platt returned to prison after grooming a 10-year-old girl for prostitution. Platt had already been jailed in 2009 for raping a 16-year-old who later took her own life. Rory Francis, who identifies as a woman, is also currently incarcerated and has been sentenced three times for raping children. Pierre Parsons is under supervision, since he continues to harass young girls after kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old in 1995, and stealing her clothing to wear. In 2017, Cameron “Cinnamon” Hakeke and Alex Seu, who both identify as women, were sentenced for violent crimes: Hakeke kidnapped a 19-year-old woman before dragging her into a flat, cutting her hair and tasering her. Seu pleaded guilty on three charges of indecent assault and two of sexual violation, one of which involved Seu dragging a drunk man into an alleyway and pushing him into a brick wall. In 2014, “Shelley” Williams pleaded guilty to three charges of assault, following prior convictions for violent crimes in 2000, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2010, Hendrix “Hina” Tutaki assaulted a pregnant woman and a “transwoman” named Glen Cooper pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to injure.
And
This discourse has impacted women’s sports in New Zealand outside women’s gyms. Anton “Kate” Weatherly competed as a man in mountain biking competitions until he decided to compete as a “woman” in January, winning the elite women’s division at the national championships near Wanaka in February. Prior to his “transition” (which includes hormone therapy — testosterone levels are still acknowledged as indicative of sex in sport) he had competed in grades lower than elite, usually finishing mid-pack. Gavin “Laurel” Hubbard represented New Zealand in women’s weightlifting in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, having already taken gold in the Australian International women’s weightlifting championships in 2017, when he lifted 42 lbs more than Samoan silver medalist Iuniarra Sipaia.
[...] HRC advisor for sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics Taine Polkinghorne said:
“There is no valid reason to exclude trans women from competitive women’s sports. Laurel is a woman — not a man masquerading as a woman to gain medals or glory…
… Participation in sport and physical activity is a human right.”

This is all so terribly worrying and depressing, especially in light of the silencing of women across social media ramping up, lately. They are genuinely trying to crush our ability to even protest! It's become sincerely Orwellian, and it's frightening. What can we even do? Sad

Yes it does need to be seen more widely in NZ, though one can imagine the reaction it would get from some quarters.I said that my MP is aware of the dangers of Self Id, but he is up against all the Green MPs, and Louisa Wall has certainly pinned her colours to the mast. The fact that she used the expression Terf shows how much of the Transgender activist's poison she has taken on board. It's more than past time that the PM took a grip on this situation with regard to the contempt her government MPs have shown to the public.
I have not heard from Paula Bennett regarding my email Self-Id, which is disappointing. As Opposition spokesperson for Women's Affairs she must be well aware by now that it is going to be a big issue in the new year. But perhaps the opposition will want to be seen as 'woke' as the government. Who knows!

Presumably Laurel claims to be a woman?

In every interview I have read or heard, Laurel makes no claim to be a woman. That assumption is made by the interviewer.

Look how nervous Laurel gets here (self-grooming gestures) when the interview talks about "becoming a woman":

I got a message from the office of Hon Paula Bennett today, saying the email I sent on Self Id had been received, and it would be passed on to her for consideration. The message included an apology for the delayed response. So that's good.
And the John Campbell interview? It's so frustrating to see the fawning over a person who essentially cheated a young woman weight-lifter out of her chance to represent New Zealand. The association which manages weight lifting in NZ should be ashamed of themselves because they put winning at all costs over the integrity of the sport.
And in the end, don't the transgender people who demand inclusion in female sports in which it is obvious they have an unfair advantage cheat themselves? Their victories are hollow ones, but they are too self obsessed to see it.

Yeahnahyeah · 04/12/2018 00:43

Re your last sentence Opi, I wonder if some if them (not saying Laurel) simply get off on "getting one over those bloody women". Some men to this day resent and even hate women's rights.

Ereshkigal · 04/12/2018 00:47

To be honest, when I argue about trans issues as a feminist on social media, I first have to fight off lots of anti feminist men who don't care about trans issues. Are even completely hostile to them. Because it's rather more delicious to them to wind up women they disagree with, rather than males.

OtepotiLilliane42 · 04/12/2018 01:43

I think you are right Yeahnahyeah about some trans athletes who very much enjoy their advantages over women competitors (Dr Rachel something from Canada who won races in women's cycling? Gloried in winning, and rightfully got blasted for it). But Laurel? Didn't seem from the Campbell interview that she had that kind of attitude. Laurel hinted she had issues about being a young male in NZ culture which could be explored more fruitfully in a different kind of interview.
Ereshkigal I am not on social media of any sort, mainly because I am useless at technology, but it must be exhausting debating people who don't essentially care.

Yeahnahyeah · 04/12/2018 04:30

Apologies of going off topic a but, but here is the Women's world handball championship, only ONE team (Iran) was all female. Australia won with their team member who has a penis and a very male physique, is 190cm tall and weighs 130kilos. Nothing to see here folks....move along.

Just finished reading all the submissions to the BDMRR Bill, which is up on the NZ Parliamentary Website. It's worth noting that there is nothing in the submissions opposing the introduction of self identification which could possibly be construed as showing any animosity towards the transgender community . Yet, as one person testified, they were subjected to harassment, including the threat of physical violence, for merely raising genuine concerns.
What really bothers me is that Government MPs Jan Logie, Marama Davidson and Louisa Wall colluded in this false outrage. It shows that they are in thrall to the extremists here, which is not a comforting thought.

nauticant · 07/12/2018 10:12

If you're new to this OtepotiLilliane42 one thing you will need to get used to is trans activists threatening women, acting abusively towards women, supporting those who abuse women, and claiming that they are on the receiving end of all this from women.

What might do your head in most is that we-are-being-abused-by-women becomes part of the accepted narrative and if you make any attempt to present evidence of what is actually happening this will be accepted as proof of your "transphobia".

OtepotiLilliane42 · 07/12/2018 23:51

Yes, I am new to this nauticant. I happened to see a discussion on BBC World a few weeks ago, which must have been on the proposal to introduce Self Id in the UK. I remember taking an instant dislike to a middle aged transwoman, who refused to listen to the other members of the panel, one of whom I now know was Debbie Hayton.( I hope the surname is correct). She seemed an interesting person, with her calm and reasonable manner, so I googled her. From there I was led to A Woman's PlaceUK, then on to Mumsnet, where I discovered to my horror that NZ was also planning to introduce Self Id. I told my twin about it, who said she wishes I hadn't! Because once we knew, we had to do something. So we emailed our local MP, and signed the letter to all MPs on the speakupforwomennz website. I emailed the opposition spokesperson for Women's Affairs about the issue, who replied personally to say she would raise my concerns with the Minister. I presume she meant Julie Ann Genter, Green MP, Minister for Women. Then we wrote to the PM Jacinda Ardern, with copies to the coalition Leaders. We are emailing the Minister for Women this weekend with a list of straightforward questions that someone in her office should be able to answer. My question is: why have the TRAs, who are basically a bunch of nasty yobs, be given such power in the first place? We are now in an Orwellian nightmare where language is twisted so that it loses all meaning, and rigorous free and open debate is cravenly abandoned by those institutions whose purpose is it is to uphold and promote it!
Why is no one in authority not calling out these misogynist thugs and bullies for what they are? Why are they so frightened of open discussion on this particular issue that they have to call it hate speech in order to silence it? Well, those are the questions we asked our MPs and Prime Minister, and I hope they take them seriously.

HomeStar · 08/12/2018 12:02

Mckinnon also believes it shouldn't be a requirement to drop testosterone level to compete against women. That is the endgame here I think.

It's a very shortsighted endgame. Does McKinnon really not understand that if that happens then women's sports will be overrun by men claiming to be trans? And after that, either women's sport will collapse entirely or sports organisations will call time on the whole stupid trans farce. I know some TRAs actually are shooting for women's sport to not exist any more, which is just horrifying and sad. Why are feminists nurturing these cuckoos in the nest?

I do think McKinnon is very invested in McKinnon's own personal medal-winning, though. How will they cope with men who are better cyclists joining the game and stealing their thunder?

HomeStar · 08/12/2018 12:05

ahh just realised how sidetracked my post is from the thread topic, sorry about that. I do really wonder about that logic though!

SunnyintheSun · 09/12/2018 19:32

Tongue in cheek article on Stuff about self-ID. Comments show where NZ is at on this one - how is it that the politicians are on a different page?
