Or is she just another everywoman fed up with the current mess?

Well, the least I can do is to share to Twitter items from Meghan's daily Feminist Currant email. It's outrageous that Twitter have silenced her while allowing the egregious Dr Harrop and so many others to carry on regardless.

happydappy2 · 24/11/2018 17:43

I believe that Megan Murphys Feminist Current, used to get some sort of funding, but someone managed to put a stop to that as they didn’t like what she was saying....(it’s only a truthful round up of daily feminist issues) I say only, but it’s amazing-the shit that women have to put up with is unbelievable. It’s well worth subscribing to & spreading the word.
Twitter won’t be around much longer if they keep banning all these people who are not saying anything hateful, just truthful......

This is the snowflakes discussion on Start The Week, which was extremely interesting. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00017py Thanks for that tip, R0wan.

Arranfan. Jodie Ginsberg the head ( not sure of her title) of index on censorship did tweet about it. But they should really make a more formal statement if they still haven't.

Someone upthread mentioned the funding for feminist current. I believe it's all private donations now. You can donate online through the website.

pachyderm · 24/11/2018 20:12

Isn't it a kind of DARVO when TRAs accuse you of being "full of hate" when you're politely making a point? I was baffled when some young women (or nonbinaries as they called themselves) said I was "spewing bigotry" and "spouting hate" like some kind of transphobic geyser, when I was querying their insistence on using gender neutral pronouns around female reproduction. I was being mild and factual and measured, while they were swearing and calling me names in upper case, but I was worse than Hitler.

Jodie Ginsberg:

Another day, another dismal attempt by twitter to police debate. We need to be able to discuss tough questions openly, without one side or other crying hate speech and getting opponents silenced. Currently Twitter policy and practice hinders this when it should be helping. [re: MeganEMurphy]

I appreciate Jodie G's tweet. Nonetheless I think it goes beyond this summary as people are being given suspensions and bans for quoting Hansard, UK law, and even ONS statistics. We are nowhere near tough questions when fundamentals like those are against T&Cs and when it looks like it's one side that is being silenced and traduced. I don't know of any TRAs who've been banned for quoting any of those (I might be wrong).

I think it would be useful for various censorship and fact-checking organisations to issue formal statements to object to Twitter's new rules, either independently or as a joint enterprise.

I might be misremembering but I have a feeling it was "Hailey Heartless".

welshbookworm · 24/11/2018 23:12

A friend on FB just posted this. It sickens me that the obnoxious Dr H can openly gloat on Twitter like this and has never to my knowledge been restricted or suspended.

Should I know Meghan Murphy?
welshbookworm · 24/11/2018 23:41

Further to that, Twitter's updated "Hateful conduct policy" has just come into force, and guess what? Just like WordPress it now bans misgendering and deadnaming. It also says it will suspend accounts which issue threats of death or injury, but I won't hold my breath about that.

I am still fuming that their list of protected characteristics includes (quite rightly) race, sexuality, and gender identity (read into that Oxford comma what you will regarding the scope of the earlier parenthetical comment), but not sex.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 25/11/2018 08:40

Observer article on this (also talks about Kathleen stock)

Debate ends when we label views we simply disagree with as ‘hatred

arranfan · 25/11/2018 11:29

I agree with some of their arguments, disagree with others.

I'm curious to learn which arguments KM disagrees with but it's easier to trot out this stuff with 'faults on both sides' than to engage.

Me too, and the same is true of WordPress's new T&Cs

sanluca · 25/11/2018 14:08

So I tweeted is support of Meghan, and guess what, 12 hour ban.

For the person who mentioned index on censorship, can I email them about this? I have sworn only once on Twitter, never wished anyone any harm, even wish people who are vile, a good day, but have stated multiple times that twaw mantra is bullshit. I was just in the midst of an argument with a transwoman who said it was offensive that I mentioned my periods in reference to biological sex. They will now probably accuse me of walking away from the 'debate'.

Next time a TRA says transwomen are so marginalised, with Twitter and the government gunning for them, at least I can tell them that that is a barefaced lie.

welshbookworm · 25/11/2018 16:07

sanluca if that happened to you it will surely be happening to a lot of other people, as Twitter is full of support posts and retweets for Meghan. Did they say exactly why you'd been given a temporary ban? I gather Twitter isn't terribly keen on biology or mention of genitals either. Such fastidiousness in a platform rife with porn and rape threats. Hmm

I got reported for the first time when I sent this tweet to Monzo the other evening: "Hi Monzo, the majority of the British population doesn't think transwomen are women or transmen are men. In fact less than 20% do. Not sure this policy of yours will appeal to the widest audience." Apparently I didn't violate their rules this time, but next time, who knows?

sanluca · 25/11/2018 19:14

Violating Twitter guidelines. Specifically I said transwomen aren't women and women don't have penises. Some would see it as goading, but it was in response to the fact people (TRAs) were saying it was right Meghan was banned as she was saying hateful things. It was my way of saying f* you. See, told you I was always polite. Just not always nice.

welshbookworm · 25/11/2018 20:17

Perhaps not nice in some people's eyes, but biologically 100% correct.

TeiTetua · 26/11/2018 15:54

That article is by Julie Bindel--no surprise to see that she supports Meghan Murphy!

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 26/11/2018 16:26

Was there anything in the article you thought non-nonsensical, fallacious or inaccurate?

welshbookworm · 26/11/2018 17:27

A very fair, factual article by Julie Bindel. I don't see how anyone could object to it. Censorship is just as dangerous when it comes from the progressive left as when it comes from the reactionary right.
