This looks like an incredible facility and from the little I have gleaned from this article, gives me a bit of hope for the future of women and girls in the Middle East - am I right in thinking that?

Now Damien Hirst, I mostly find his art repulsive or dull, mass manufactured, but I love the scupltures.

Will we ever get anything like this investment in healthcare in the UK?! A few SureStart centres would be something...

Huh. Sounds great. In the Guardian I suppose this is the "right type" of feminism. Can't bring myself to click on the link. I only suppose it's all veh woke.

Qatar is better on women's rights than some of the other middle eastern countries. The Middle East is very varied on women's rights.

Something that continues to worry me is countries like Iran and Afghanistan used to be good countries to be a woman in. Islam was the excuse for men to roll back women's rights there. The problem is not Religion, (as always) it's men using religion to subjugate women.

It's worth a read, an insight into how healthcare is developing in Qatar and interesting links to modern art too.
Nothing woke about it - don't think gender is mentioned once!

"Energy-rich Qatar has become a major buyer of contemporary art. It is seeking to portray itself as one of the most progressive states in the region against the backdrop of a bitter standoff with Gulf rivals led by Saudi Arabia."

Having a hosp for women to have babies etc is hardly revolutionary is it? I mean we'd never get one here in the UK TBH the toriess woudl like to shut down the nhs anyway,

But Qatar have oodles of cash and want to be seen as progressive and also invest in art so this all seems fine?

UpstartCrow · 19/11/2018 10:20

Can women with no money use it?
If I had wealth to invest, I wouldn't put the bulk of it into art or tourism, I'd put it into creating a functional infrastructure. Housing, sanitation, clean water, education, healthcare, farming, industry. To me, these are the indicators of civilisation.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 19/11/2018 10:56

UpstartCrow this is what I'd be interested in. How exactly does a young woman in Qatar access the support provided by that centre? Can they just walk up?
How many drop-in clinics could have been created with the $ put into Damien Hirst's sculptures?
(But that is always a question posed for art & culture isn't it, yet cultural expression has always been a hallmark of human civilisation from cave painting onwards).
