Victorian Cancer Council (Australia) refers to “people with a cervix” in campaign

The Victorian Cancer Council in Australia has referred to “people with a cervix” in the GLBTI community in one of their ads on Facebook. Possibly forgetting that they would actually be “women”, and some of them might actually be - you know - lesbians. But let’s just erase all that and call them “people with a cervix”. Let’s not acknowledge those pesky adult human female homosexuals.
Feel free to leave your own comments on their Facebook page.

Remind me again how reducing people to a body part is wrong, or is that yet another stick thats only used against women?

Look at the ad
They are always watching.

Now who’s reducing who to the genitals and body parts.

I don't understand your post at all... do you think that lesbians don't have cervixes?

You're trawling pretty far and wide for infractions here OP.

This is a cancer organisation... that looks at cancer in different parts of the body. Including the cervix. I don't think they are reducing women to their body parts anymore than my optometrist is reducing me to my eyeballs.

Public health messages need to be clear. Sadly, many don't know what a cervix is or if they have one. So how many people will bat shit crazy wording like 'people with cervixes' alienate and possibly consign to an early grave? Well done, woke dudes. Another trophy for your mantlepiece.

There seems like there are a fair amount of transmen in Australia, who retain their female reproductive systems. So, it's probably fairly prudent of them to be fair.

From a different thread talking about pregnant transmen, it seemed like there were several dozen in Australia. As their overall population is relatively low, I think it sounded like a sizeable number.

If people are going to be insistent about using the opposite sexes pronouns and names, I do think health services do need to change their language to go along with it. As inaccurate as I might feel it is.

I think they will have to change the language around prostate and testicular cancer as well though surely?

Does your optemetrist advertise their services to ‘people with eyeballs’?

Do you think it runs through their heads that some people don’t have eyeballs and might be offended?

This happened in the summer with Cancer Research UK.
It has implications for women.
A significant number don't know they have a cervix.
An additional percentage do not know where it is /function etc.

Females undergoing medical treatments eg hormones, surgery as part of their gender transition will be given quite a lot of medical advice re gyny health risk.

Most of the gyny cancer descriptions on CRUK site have removed the words woman /female

No sign here of CRUK removing man / male from its sex specific cancers and campaigns.

If their message is for trans men, then they should direct it to them accordingly. To start the ad with the alphabet soup that includes L for lesbian, then denies the existence of women and refers to “people with cervixes” - that is not ok.
Then there are plenty of women who dont realise they are in possession of a cervix, who now think it is an organ inside a balding beardy man.
I haven’t seen ads for prostate cancer referring to “people with prostates” complete with pictures of women beaming at me ... and it’s Movember here - I see lots of ads for men in relation to this - not “people with moustaches”. With some effort I could probably grow a good lustrous one - but their campaign doesn’t seem to want to include me ... those exclusionary meninists!

People with cervixes makes zero sense. At least woman gives context. www.verywellhealth.com/cervical-defined-3157057

FWRLurker · 18/11/2018 22:12

"women and trans men" would be much clearer than cervix havers.

"women and trans men" would be much clearer than cervix havers.

It would yes.
The push will likely be coming using people who are female and identify as non-binary as well.

Raising awareness of cervical cancer & the importance of smear tests and symptom awareness shouldn't be compromised.

I can only conclude that the majority of people lobbying gyny cancer groups have been unaffected by the serious realities of these diseases either by dint of their age, sex or extreme good luck.
