Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

AIBU that I support Julian Assange‘s quest for asylum?

deepwatersolo · 16/11/2018 17:40

I can very well understand that as a feminist one cringes at what transpired about Assange‘s treatment of women, and I would have supported him facing an investigation and potentially a trial in Sweden.
At the same time, I believe he did us a service in revealing all kind of hidden agendas by states and global players, behind the backs of the people. (I absolutely do not buy into the idea that Assange is an agent of Putin - this may be a contentious issue for some here, too). Today it has transpired that Assange has been secretly indicted by the US.
I think of supporting a campaign to secure his asylum. On principle. Even though I don‘t particularly like him. AIBU?

He gave us Trump. So yes, you ARE being unreasonable, IMO.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/11/2018 17:46

I think YABU too, I am afraid. If he has assaulted women, he should face justice for it - you don’t get to cancel out evil deeds by doing good ones - not without facing up to the consequences of the bad deeds, in my book.

Runnynosehunny · 16/11/2018 17:46

YANBU because I would question the charges against him, based on the fact that it would be very convenient to the US government if he could be extradited as a criminal rather than an innocent man whose only crime was the leaks.

ZazieQueneau · 16/11/2018 17:52

YABU. He should face the consequences of his criminal actions.

He sounds like an ungrateful man child. The Ecuadorians have had to go to court over him refusing to pay for his laundry and internet usage, damaging the embassy by skateboarding and playing football and not feeding his cat properly.

TrashyTerf · 16/11/2018 17:53

Asante neglects his cat even though he has fuck all to do each and every day. For that alone, he's a piece of shit.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/11/2018 17:57

What STDG said.

PositiveVibez · 16/11/2018 17:58

Yabu.

You cannot cancel out a bad deed by doing a good one. It doesn't work like that.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/11/2018 17:58

david tennant is dt not td :D

sorry sdtg

LassWiADelicateAir · 16/11/2018 18:01

He was given the cat as a kitten. The cat presumably has no access to the outdoors. It is cruel to keep a cat permanently indoors.

FrumpyTrumpy · 16/11/2018 18:04

Well if he had raped you or your child would you feel the same?

What's the trade off for sexual assault? How many good deeds make up for it.

FrumpyTrumpy · 16/11/2018 18:05

He's a snivelling pathetic little shit and I hope they take the cat off him.

Melanippe · 16/11/2018 18:05

Assange was always going to be indicted by the US, he put service personnel in immediate danger which makes the US a wee bit cross. It made me more than a touch cross given that people I love could potentially have been caught in the crossfire. So yes, YABU. He's a giant fucking manchild who has catastrophically bitten the hand that fed him, you can find my sympathy between shit and syphilis in a good quality dictionary.

SillySallySingsSongs · 16/11/2018 18:07

YABU. He is free to leave the embassy any time he likes.

LassWiADelicateAir · 16/11/2018 18:08

He's a snivelling pathetic little shit and I hope they take the cat off him

No more need be said.

MrsTerryPratcett · 16/11/2018 18:09

Nope. He actively fought justice in his own case while pointing fingers at others. Misogynist hypocrite.

Shame because governments need kept an eye on. It's terrible that the press, whose job it is, are so shit.

Melanippe · 16/11/2018 18:13

Shame because governments need kept an eye on.

Abso-fucking-lutely

Floisme · 16/11/2018 18:15

I think he should have been fully investigated for the rape accusation.

If it's true that the USA have charged him in secret - presumably for other crimes, unrelated to the rape? - then that I find that very disturbing, no matter what kind of individual he is or whatever else he may or may not have done.

I don't think either one cancels out the other.

Rachelover40 · 16/11/2018 18:19

Who gives a flying f*? He is old news and not particularly wholesome from what we can tell.

notacooldad · 16/11/2018 18:30

The Ecuadorians have had to go to court over him refusing to pay for his laundry and internet usage, damaging the embassy by skateboarding and playing football and not feeding his cat proper
Do you really believe that is the real reason. Hmm. It makes him sound like a naughty boy.

Come off it, what do you think is going on behind the scenes? It's not about tidying up.

Either America is putting pressure on Equcador or Equador want something from the Americans.

ZazieQueneau · 16/11/2018 18:33

I think he’s probably just an irritating houseguest dad.

Not likely to take (unwanted) instruction on my views on international affairs from someone who can’t even correctly spell the name of the country he is accusing of skullduggery. Ecuador, hth.

UndercoverGC · 16/11/2018 18:33

Nobody is too important, or too holy, or too politically useful, or anything, to be a rapist, and to face charges for rape.

Floisme · 16/11/2018 18:35

Apologies, I meant to say 'alleged rape', although if you don't co-operate with an investigation then I don't think you can complain if people draw conclusions.

However my understanding is that the US secret indictment - if correct - has nothing to do with this.

The law isn't only there for good people.

Bowlofbabelfish · 16/11/2018 18:36

what flo is me said.

Justice isn’t a house points system. He can be a misogynistic prick, an accused rapist, someone who leaked things they shouldn’t and someone who leaked things that needed leaking.

The volume of info in wikileaks is huge. Some of that will be government wrongdoing and some of it may put innocent people in danger. The nature of the leak means it was fairly indiscriminate.

notacooldad · 16/11/2018 18:56

I think he’s probably just an irritating houseguest dad
i would imagine he is a bloody awful house guest but there will be things going on behind the scenes that we don't know

Yeah my spelling is shit!! I still have to rely on auto correct for Australia despite living there for 6 months! Don't get me started on Patagonia! ( it looks like I have got spelled it correct this time!)
Whats all this about unwanted instruction? it's an open conversation isn't it?

theOtherPamAyres · 16/11/2018 19:03

There is a warrant for his arrest to face charges for failing to answer his bail. He's not a special case that gets let off for no reason.

He will need to be detained and face the court (and the people who stood surety for him and had to cough up £93,000).

The time for supporters to talk about smoothing his extradition is AFTER he has been brought to justice for UK offences, in my view.
