This is just such an awful story.

www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/nov/12/victim-who-bore-abusers-baby-in-a-latrine-jailed-for-20-years-in-el-salvador-imelda-cortez

Is there anything at all we can do to support this woman, and others like her?

“Her stepfather is yet to be charged.”

For rape or abusing her since she was 12.

I suppose this is one of the many reasons that people go to such lengths to flee El Salvador.

OldCrone · 12/11/2018 08:38

“Her stepfather is yet to be charged.”

And yet they managed to charge her and send her to jail within a week of giving birth.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 12/11/2018 09:12

This vicious, worldwide hatred of women makes me so despondent sometimes.

ABitCrapper · 12/11/2018 11:21

This is absolutely awful.
I have no idea how we can help other than maybe write to our MPs suggesting that political pressure be put on Pakistan. Although with the UK's current status, that would probably be meaningless

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 13:02

Horrible example of what happens when a regime is so virulently anti-abortion:

Imprison the victim, not the paedophile

It's all about punishing women and girls for the crimes of men

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 13:15

It's El Salvador
Women who suffer miscarriages being jailed for up to 30 years

The Catholic church has been heavily active in bringing about draconian anti-abortion laws in most Latin American countries

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/aug/27/abortion-rights-latin-america

FloralBunting · 12/11/2018 13:16

It's utterly reprehensible and shameful.

chocolatebox1 · 12/11/2018 13:18

Saw this a few minutes ago in the news, really upset me. Poor poor woman, I can't believe what hell she has been through and now she is being treated like this?! I wish someone could step in and help

deepwatersolo · 12/11/2018 13:52

Ah, memories. What did one of my Catholic teachers so famously say, in front of the whole class. when I challenged him about the Catholic abortion ban, even when the women was pregnant from rape:

'Please, don't be silly, becoming pregnant from a rape is less probable than winning the jackpot in the lottery!'

What an analogy.
And as if the world didn't see thousands of lottery winners each year.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 14:10

afaik, there is no magic making a woman who has been raped less likely to become pregnant than if she had had consensual sex 🤔

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 14:13

The best way to tackle this may be to address the driving force behind these draconian laws in most of Latin America:

the Catholic church

Lobbying the Vatican and the supposedly more liberal pope to call off the Church's attack dogs

FloralBunting · 12/11/2018 14:52

Trust me, there are some of us trying, but it really is like trying to turn a battleship with a teaspoon

pallisers · 12/11/2018 14:58

This vicious, worldwide hatred of women makes me so despondent sometimes.

This. Why are women so hated?

Kewqueue · 12/11/2018 15:02

People who think the world doesn't need feminism need to read this.

MrsTerryPratcett · 12/11/2018 15:35

The fact is these countries have a much higher rate of abortion than countries that allow safe, accessible abortions and free, accessible contraception.

I can't think of a reason to follow this stupid, ugly policy except hatred of women. Because it's not to prevent abortion.

deepwatersolo · 12/11/2018 15:42

BigChoc I assume my teacher‘s claim was that rape was so super rare, and then you have a 90% chance of not being fertile or so.(maybe I give him too much credit but I don‘t think he meant not enjoying it is a contraceptive). The bottom line is he wanted to shut me up with a show stopper, cause he knew he had no humane argument.

deepwatersolo · 12/11/2018 15:47

A couple of years after the incident, the women impregnated by rape in captivity in the Balkan wars was all over the news. I was so tempted to walk into my old school and confront him with that in front of some class. But I didn‘t. Still regret it.

AnyFucker · 12/11/2018 15:48

Some influential people actually believe that pregnancy is not a natural risk of rape here

deepwatersolo · 12/11/2018 15:59

Well, yeah, I’m the US some prominent people believe in intelligent design, too. But I don‘t think the educational system has failed on such an epic scale anywhere in Europe.

scepticalwoman · 12/11/2018 17:28

In the same edition is this dreadful story about a brother murdering his sister in an appalling honour killing:

www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/nov/12/they-see-no-shame-honour-killing-video-shows-plight-of-syrian-women

UndercoverGC · 12/11/2018 17:59

Petition here: www.reproductiverights.org/las17
Amnesty has been campaigning on abortion laws in El Salvador for several years.

Ereshkigal · 12/11/2018 18:51

This vicious, worldwide hatred of women makes me so despondent sometimes.

This.

AwkwardSquad · 12/11/2018 19:33

Thank you for the petition link. This case is appalling. I had a look on the Amnesty International site, on the individual cases page, but could not see anything about this one. Hopefully they’ll pick it up.

failingatlife · 12/11/2018 20:10

Signed & shared. Shocking that this is going on in so many Latin American countriesAngry
